The Dollar Store Challenge

That's great, Troop, that your grandfather was able to pull back or be pulled back from the brink. I've lost more than one uncle who couldn't see what they were doing to themselves.
I've yet to try a Red Bull. Someone told me it's like drinking a lollipop.
My friend is so seriously on the wagon that he is some sort of manager of AA here in town. If the $tore doesn't open any time soon, maybe he can start a support group.

It's been a brutal 3 weeks, under hellish conditions, but somehow I have managed to survive, and today THE DOLLAR STORE IS OPEN AGAIN!!! Yes, my local dollar store has reopened and it's never looked more wonderful. It's brighter than ever, no doubt due to new paint everywhere. And the stock is stacked nice and neat on the shelves. People haven't had a chance to rummage through it and make it look like a windy day at the dump yet. In fact, it's so tidy it looks like something out of a science fiction movie.
So come on: What should I buy? Lets have more survival ideas.

Hey guys, going back to the nickel and sheath knife, you can buy a sheath knife in a dollar store??? And the nickel, couldn't you grind it down and use it for fire starting. Im not sure if its a dime or nickel that can be used as fire starting.

You can buy utility knives and sets of steak knives in the dollar store near me, so I wouldn't be surprised if you can find one with a sheath knife.
As for using a dime or a nickel for starting a fire, there's one way to find out. Wink

(Grinding it down, though, might take more effort than a fire bow or other methods.)

I tried to grind a dime down with a file, didnt light it though... Going to light it soon though!

I saw a new dollar store today. Very Happy

They actually had a "Camping" section, Shocked

though it was only one small rack. It had foil blankets (I should have checked the size), plastic canteens and dishes, and ball type compasses with suction cups on the bottom (likely for use on a car dashboard). These compasses worked quite well, quicky pointing to north no matter how you turned them around. (In fact, I have a similar one pinned to my pack for quick reference and entertainment. Cool

)
But they also had little compasses on clips. These didn't work at all. They respond slowly and end up pointing in any old direction. Mad

You've all seen compasses like this before; usually as part of a watch band, bottle opener, etc. To call them toys is generous. Seeing these things today made me wonder if anyone is actually trying to use one to find directions. If so, they'd better have some pretty good survival skills. At best, these things would confuse a child trying to learn wildneress skills. Evil or Very Mad

Is it too much to hope for that these so-called compasses be required to carry a disclaimer saying that they are purely for decorative purposed and cannot be used to deternine direction?

Ya, like I have a treking pole for hiking and it has a little compass on the top of the handle, as bushrat said already, they don't work, thats not why i bought the trecking pole though Laughing

This subject should get a "bump" and a "sticky". This is an awesome subject. Maybe add three different seasons.

1) Deep Winter (everything frozen) and the dollar store
2) Cold spring or Fall (hypothermia) and the dollar store
3) Hot buggy muggy Summer and the dollar store.

I'll bump this up to where people can find it since it's mentioned in the "BushRat" thread in the "Who Are Survivorman Fans?" section. Laughing

My local dollar store is still open. There is a small discount store in the same mall. By not being a 'dollar' store, then can sell items in the $2 to $15 range, so you can find stuff there that's not available in the dollar store. And when they do sell something the dollar store carries, they charge $.99 Laughing

Well was at a Dollar store Friday to by the large box of wooden matches.
2 big packs for 2 bucks, how can yo go wrong. And !, they had emergency tents, just the small one, its orange, for a dollar Shocked

so i got one, what they heck, for a $ 1.00 quiky shelter.

This didn't seem to warrant its own thread, so I'll put it here:
After you leave the $tore, go to the library and sign out some books. You'll get a slip of paper listing each book and stating when they're due back. Free paper! The more books you take out, the longer the paper. And you might want to consider tossing one of the books into your pack. Maybe one on wilderness survival. It'll give you something to read in camp, and if worse comes to worst, it will provide lots of tinder. Of course you'll have to pay for it after you're rescued, but it will be worth every penny.
