Cool Eric, kinda dark but I see sparks so thats what matters. I tried the hacksaw blade for the magnsium and the firesteel, but i'll stick with the knif efor magnsium and the piece that comes with the firesteel. I know it eats up the fire steel but it gives a hell of a lot of sparks.

The sparks that I do get suck pretty hard and I think it would be a lot of work trying to get a fire going with these two pieces, but it's a start Very Happy

I think you'll find that it is nearly impossible for uncharred fibers to catch a spark from flint and steel. Also... forgive me if I misunderstood, but it kinda sounds like a few of you think that the sparks come from the rock... again, I may be reading into this wrong, but for those who are unsure of the whole flint and steel thing... the sparks come from the hardened carbon steel not the rock... as long as you can find something hard enough to shave hardend steel you'll get sparks.
Rick

here is an explanation that Bigblue gave on wildsurvive... awsome.

"However, the spark is created, indeed, by "shaving" a teeeeny shard of steel away from the main striker as a result of concussive force and sheering action. On a molecular level, the concussion between the sharp edge of the flint and the steel quickly parts the bond of the crystaline carbon lattice which contains the iron molecules causing a small shard to "break away" under high stress. This instantanious stress is what creates the energy. That energy is difused into the mass of the striker, but also contained in the parting shard. If the shard is of the right size and the energy great enough, then the metal will become hot enough to glow red-hot...the spark."

Well idk if its flint but today i took LOTS of rocks and used them on it and they mostly all gave sparks. Obsidian even gave sparks.
