Season 3 Episode 3 Arctic Tundra Talk *SPOILERS!* |
|
I downloaded and watched Episode 3 yesturday and I have to say that it was another great episode. This time Les is in the Arctic Tundra and has with him some fishing gear, fixed blade knife, some whale blubber/skin, and a few other so called "advanced" survival items as he is going into the episode as a lost researcher.
Things I liked about this episode:
- Les prioritised his survival and made that clear to the viewers at home. He made shelter, talked about how weather is important to consider and for the rest of the show he based his "next move" on what needed to be done rather then by what he wanted to do. At one point he moved inland by hiking and canooing over parts of a river rather than canooing through the ocean to the rivers. This was because he very easily could have been tip'd over and died from hypothermia. After arriving at his location the ocean had setteled down and he could have canooed had he waited but since he could not count on this happening he was satisfied with what he had done. The viewers were told this.
- Les actually caught a solid meal, actually enough for 4 meals for a few people! Catching the 4 large Arctic Char was great to see. After 3.5.. or was it 4.5 days without food this was a huge boost of moral fr him. xactly how anyone else would react to such a bounty after so long without eating in a cold climate. What Les did with the fish was show the viewers how to cut it to let it dry out best to preserve it, and then he talked about how if his film crew and himself were stuck there they would at least have soe food once theirs had run out. Another great point for viewers - just becuase you have abounty of something does not mean it will not run out. He may have never been able to catch another fish after that and must rashon out everything he has to extend the pontential for survival.
- The shelter building was also a nice touch. Being creative and taking into consideration natural shelter is key to building a great survival shelter.
- Les also used a new, at least i dont' think he used this method before in previous seasons, fire starting method. Battery and steel wool, something that they teach you in the boy scouts but it works! Was great to see this on the show.
Things I did not like as much
- nothing. It was the best episode so far this season.
One thing that Les also did in this episode was pulling out early. The weather would have made him not be able to come back after 7 days so they pulled out after 6. This sends the msg home that even if you are a pro at surviving that you are not a super hero. Les shows his human side and pulls out early, truly showing the dangers of weather in this or any climate.
Your thoughts?

Pretty great episode, I don't mind too much that Les is bringing a little more gear and showing different techniques.
See how quickly his mood changed when he caught those char? He was happy as hell the rest of the episode

LOVED IT expecally when he caught the fishes he was as giddy as a school girl. I laughed with him and I agree on all points with you daffy.
I almost cried about that part when he was explaining about not having any food for 4 days.

I am pretty sure that I was giddy for him when he caught the fist too. Can't imagin how much life that would put in you after 4 days of being cold and hungry... by far the best ep this season even if it was cut short a day.
