Its spelled Sextant, and this particular one is only $220. Sweet price, but I would make sure it is fully functional before purchasing. My brother got one once, but it turned out that it wasn't made fully functional, which pretty much makes it *^(@, he is obsessed with sailing, but I mean come on, if you can use one of those, you got no worries. Kinda makes a compass look real easy to read

Wow, $ 220 ? ..... thats cheap for an all brass sextant, unless its not " solid " brass & just coated steel, then $ 220 would make sence. Ya if you can read one of those a compass is like reading the ABC book in grade 3.

I think I'll stick with my Brunton.
I thought it was a sextant, but I wasn't sure.

I had the choice between the brunton 8099, and the Silva Ranger. IMO from looking at them both the ranger seemed more rugged, and I decided to go with the ranger because the brunton seemed like it's mostly about looks. Really there's probably not much difference quality wise anyway. Even a $10 baseplate compass will get you perfectly accurate results.

My lanyard on my compass was really bugging me. You might say, then just take it off. Well It holds the declination adjustment tool on it so I can't take it off, so I fixed it. I braided it by tying alternate half hitches. Now it wont get tangled up with everything else.
