Besides, if you get good at using it, you can look for things off the beaten trail. I've used them to find springs, streams or other geological formations or just to use the compass. It can be fun.

That's too much work! Just flash your GPS with the location from your computer and then go find it! Laughing Wink

Got my new compass today, a Brunton 9045 with a thermometer and wind chart. Not bad!

What do you do if the darn thing stops working?
Bet you could take a metal part out of it to use as a compass needle.
That would be a pretty expensive compass.
Maybe you should just buy a nice little compass like the one OGTL just bought. Pretty sweet and you'll know at what temperature your GPS conked out at Wink Wink

You've got a point, it's best not to rely on electrical devices to save your life or depend on a GPS when in a dire situation and you realize you forgot the batteries.

I bought a silva ranger about a month ago. It was about $55. It's really nice, I like the adjustable declination, and my favorite thing is the inclinometer. It's the black arrow and it tells you the slope of something, say a mountain. Very Happy One thing I'm confused on are the glow in the dark sights. Why would you have glow in the dark sights without having a glowing needle and shed? The dial isn't illuminated, but that's not as important as the needle and shed. Confused Has a v-notch and a slit through the mirror for sighting. I'm really happy with it, works great. Razz

I have a cheap one of them. If you get the military ones they're called lensatic compasses. They come in mills instead of degrees. Neutral

It is in mills. Ive seen those $ 5.00 walwart jobs, lol.
But hey, if thats all a person has to spend, any compass is better than no compass.
I bought it cause i have 1 in my expition pack and it stays there. So, i needed another one Rolling Eyes
Its good enufe for keeping direction if i go off course & start trail blazing Cool
I never take one thing out of one pack for the other, cause as sure as the sun comes up i will take the other pack and forget that i have taken something out that i will need !. So i pretty much buy 2 of everything.

I remember 1/3600 of a degree from my Algebra book. Smile

I tried to look it up in the dictionary and the encyclopedia, but I can't find it. Confused Sad
