Have you chosen a handgun yet to carry? Revolver, or semi-auto?

For reliability, I would choose a large frame revolver. But a friend of mine bought a Beretta for me and will send it to me as soon as I get my permit. He owns a lot of guns and thinks the Beretta will suit me perfectly.

I have really long fingers and some of the smaller grips don't fit my hand very well. The large frame revolver fit perfectly. And it never jammed on me. I also shot with a semi-automatic S&W but that puppy jammed on me several times in just 50 rounds. It may be that the gun was just dirty since it was a loaner at the range.

Since I know nothing about guns, I'll definitely be taking a gun safety class! I wonder if the local community college offers "Women with Guns 101"? Very Happy

Yep, revolvers are certainly more reliable. Personally though I prefer semi-autos (good ones, that is). My carry is a Steyr M9-A1 9mm. Not as well known as other polymer tactical pistols (such as Glock), but far nicer to handle.

As far as jamming, yep I'm willing to bet that the S&W was probably dirty, and depending on the ammo... you may have been shooting some inexpensive rounds which could also add to the problem. Jamming at the ejector I'd imagine. Another thing you may be doing is "limp-wristing" when you fire. If your wrist is too relaxed/loose at the moment that you fire, then the slide loses some of it's kinetic energy and so doesn't have enough force to ram another round into battery. Happens to a lot of new shooters with semi-autos, and gets better with practice. You might ask them at your range about this. Won't happen with revolvers of course.

There are many reasons. The balistics from a .45 and a 9mm at close distance is marginal at best, this also applies to the .40s&w. The main reason for the switch was NATO compliance. If NATO standardizes a particular round (5.56, 9mm, etc) member nations are expected to issue weapons in that caliber so there would be fewer difficulties in supply. At the time (1985 or so) the U.S. was (probably?) the only country to issue a .45 ACP pistol. I remember the huge controversy at the time about the switch from the 'gool ol' .45' to the 9mm, and gun magazines ran dozens of different articles about ".45 vs 9mm".

The Ruger Charger web page isn't working right at this moment, but it's essentially a 10/22 rifle with a shorter barrel and pistol grip. Should be lots of fun to bust pop cans or take rabbit or squirrel sized game.

I just got my Glock21 SF (glock rail) and I absolutly love it! I liked the 21, but the huge grip made it a little funky to hold it. Even though they only removed a minor amount of backstrap it has made a huge difference to me. I also had them install the trijicon night sights when I bought it, I couldn't help it. Embarassed

Getting the gun, and three mags for $460 and the night sights for $60 installed right there I couldn't pass it up. Cool
