My Tinder Pouch Tutorial |
|
Well ive done my secound pouch & thought i would show you what i do. Its simple & easy, just a bit of time is all you need. First off get some leather, what ever kind you like. Heavy leather i wouldn't use cause its to hard to work with
i choose a nice soft leather. First off the demensions i used for cut size are. 5.3/4 inch why ? i dont know, lol, thats just what i picked. Its big enufe for my stricker, Jute, & stick of fatwood, it works for me. But you can use any size you want. After you have cut your pieces pick a side you wish to show. With my leather there is a finished side & a more ruff side. I liked the finished side. So what ever side you choose to show, mark the opposite.
I just use a pen. when you punch your holes for sewing, mark 1/4 inch in from the side all the way down & around the bottom back to the top on other side. Its important to use a ruler to keep lines strait & lined up, cause when you go to sew them & they are not lining up its a majour pain to say the least. And your leather will bunch up making it look not so nice. I have a punch as you will see & it marks the holes to sew every 16th of a inch. This tool is a must if you want to do more sewing, makes things go along much faster. I use whats known as a running stitch, very simple.
When you are ready to start to sew, lay the 2 pieces inside out to what side you want showing. You will see what i mean in the pics. When you run your first stitch of waxed thread through pull it so you leave a minimum of 3 inches showing. Now start sewing. It took me alittle bit to finish the sewing about 40 minutes, im not fast & dont really care when im doing stuff like this. Every 2 stitches pull the thread tight to take up slack. Once you get to the other side of the pouch just loop it over your last stitch & go back the way you came to where you started. Once you are here cut the thread the same leaving 3 inches. Now all you do is tie it like you do when you tie your show, not the over under bow part just the rap around, do this twice. The wax thread hold very well, will not come undone. Now you turn the pouch inside out to show the finished side as my pics show. Now the flap is easy you just cut it to fit, it can be long if you want, doesn't matter do what you like here. Thenyou pick what you want to fasten the flap down. I used a piece of maple stick on my first one, i just split the stick & used the half as a button. On this one i used an old button, i though it looked good & fit the pouch. Same stitching you use here as the pouch. Leave at least 3 inchs so you can tie it off. The tool i used are simple ones. As you can see from the first pic. And Bam ! your done. Your tinder pouch is ready to fill. I put my Jute in a zip lock bag, its no good if it's damp or wet. This isn't a water prof pouch all though you could make it. Theres lots of products you can buy for that. Anyways i hope i said everything in order & it made sence. Its my first tutorial. If your unclear to anything just ask. It really is strait forward to do & hope the pics work to show you what to do. Cheers.

Very cool write up! I think it coved all the steps needed very well, and the photos are very clear IMO. I will say that everything turns out better when you think it out a couple times. I need to make me one of these soon.

I was thinkig of maybe a camo pouch, heavy cotton, & water prof it with Nic-Wax. I have 2 leather
ones now so, maybe a cloth material mit be in order next.
> I get the " i cant sleep's " often myself. Alot on my mind as of latley. As you know. Cheers Bro
