My Homemade Gear |
|
I will be posting some of the gear I've made in the past and the stuff I'm working on, now. Any suggestions or opinions are welcome. I want this stuff to be useful and practical.
Here is a firepouch I made lastnight. I borrowed heavily from my friend, Bow, on this design. I liked that it hangs below the belt and stays out of the way. (Contents: Two squares of tinfoil, tinder fungus in a ziplock, piece of fatwood and a flint.)
Here is the latest knife I've been working on. It's a woodlore type... I really like the simple design. I've just completed the shaping stage. Next comes drilling for the handle slabs and then its time for heat treat.
Here are some others... alot of you have seen these.
Neck knife
Antler handled knife
Sheath and belt pouch

Wow, that looks really cool! I also like the how it hangs below the belt line too, nice design IMO. What is the yellow in the last photo?
*Edit*
Duh! That yellow is sandpaper isn't it.

Dave,
I didn't really use any measurements .... I knew what I wanted to put in it and made the pouch to suit.
Turd,
I use the back of my knife as a steel for the flint... one less thing to carry I guess.
AZ,
Something else I didn't mention is that the button is made of fatwood which is useful in firestarting.... also the pouch is stiched with over 25 feet of artificial sinew... I stitched it so that about 17 feet can be unravelled with the pouch still intact. So there are afew hidden treasures there, too.
Rick

everything looks good Askdamice, my only comment is on the material used for the neck knife. This is just a personal preferance for me, but i like to have something that would break or seperate if i fell down a hill and it got caught on soemthing solid. You wouldn't want your neck knife hanging you.

Turd,
Ya, my knives are all carbon steel and throw a good spark off the flint.
Daffy,
I had that in mind when I made the neck knife. There are two holes in the sheath... the lanyard ends are fed through and a single knot holds each in place... It is the weak link and will pull through if alot of weight is applied. I tested it before I made the sheath. The only thing I would change is to make a sheath with a kydex liner for safety.
Wildthing,
You make everything... groovy.

Mice, how did you do the stitches on the firepouch? Did you just sew hole to hole first, then come back and do wrap around stitches? I've tried a couple ways but I just can't get it to look like yours. Are you using a thick thread?

This drawing sucks but this is how I did the first line of stitching. I tried off the first stitch and the last one of this line which secured the pouch together... the I just went back and started wrapping the sinew first from hole to edge, then hole to hole. Three times each. The sinew was doubled up, too. Hope this helps. Be careful not to sew through the sinew... it gets pretty tangled if you ever have to undo it for emergency cordage.
