Some Wild Onions I picked... |
|
Hey Guys..
Went for a walk in the bush today and found some real nice wild onions.. There were quite a few of them so I grabbed a nice handful...
Had them diced up on some speggetti for dinner...
Strong little buggers....

Hey Guys...
Turd....
That's VERY easy to do...
Go to a Good book store and look for a Wild Edibles book...
When you go for a walk, start looking.. Theres literally TONS of wild edibles...
There were several things I seen today just in a 30 minute walk...
Personally I'm waiting for the wild Strawberries and Mulberrys to come ripe....
OMG,, I almost eat myself sick on them!

I have Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West but I haven't taken it out with me yet
I have to remember to take it next time
It would be nice if I could learn from some one like a relative.

Hey Eric...
Yaa it's always nice to have someone there with you for sure...
If not,, maybe a friend can go, or just do it by yourself..
It can be fun..
Remember to bring your guides and some containers with you....

Hey, how do those taste raw?
How would you use them in the wild? eg. cooking and preparing them?

Hey Eric..
They are pretty good raw actually,, not Real hot but a good flavor and fairly strong..
As far as use.. WoW, you could actually use them any way you would use a regular onion,, you just need more of them...
Could be added to soup, can be boiled just as they are or add them to just about anything you would cook..
I would like to try them in a rabbit or squirrel stew.. Add some cat tail root and it starts to come together...

I've found that if you kind of grill them until they are almost black on the outside you can eat them like an apple. Just bite the part that use to be white off and throw the green away. But I like onions cooked like that.

That's a cool story turd! Three years to get a plant to grow right? I guess I don't have the patience to wait.

Normark, yummy looking onions!
I remember I used to go out on walks, find those, and eat them raw all the time. Great food resource and tasty snack.
Sarah's even got a wild patch of those in her back yard, and we pull them for her cooking.
Now if only I could learn to be as good a cook!

Hey Tel....
Actually Leeks are slightly different....
They are more Oblong that wild onions..
Leek
Wild Onion
They are also Quite a bit stronger in smell and Flavor.. A wild leek should make the hair raise on the back of your neck and the fliud flow in your sinus cavity..
The wild onion is Not as powerful...
Heres a Great wildsite for foraging..
