Flint striker |
|
I made my own flint striker for a flint and steel kit, but everyone made fun of me for it (ya Turd, I cried myself to sleep that night! ) But it really was a very ugly thing, weighed too much, and wasn't very nice to hold.
As you can see, uh, yeah that was bad.
But tonight I redeamed myself I think. I tried to get a little more creative and go after a snake look that I saw on another site. So what do you think?

Naw, don't worry about it, we all were making fun of it that night. That first one was completly hideous! I was just ribbing you a little. Surprisingly that first one took longer to make than this one did! Now I just need to make some more char cloth, and order some flint.

There was some quarts out in the desert the other day that was sparking pretty good, but not anywhere near what flint does. I'll have to post my write up on a survival weekend I did the weekend the other forums went down. Lots of photos, and short vid on solar stills.

The first one used an old file that would no longer cut. This new one was cut out of a piece of leaf spring that needed to be removed. I just cut a very larg "comma" shape, and started working with that.

I don't know. If they were made with high carbon steel then I suppose they would work just fine!

actually yeah I did! I havn't ordered any real flint yet, but used the flint on my ferro rod and some charcloth it worked great! I also heated it up again, and used a file to put some snake like markings onto it.

I found an old metal file (hopefully with a high carbon element). I will make it into a striker. I also found a cool rock that hopefully sparks! If it dosent then that sucks ebcause there are no rocks in my area.
I think the rock is called Feldspar, lets hope it sparks

Today I got a spark from a rock that I found in my grandma's garden, I just hit it against an old hacksaw blade. The sparks are few and suck pretty bad, but it's a spark

GAH! I'm so POed right now, I live with people I like to call "Ultra-Cleaners". I had the rock on my desk, and it was very hard to find, I found it near 1000 islands when I was down there, now its gone. Man thats annoying now I have to go searching for it.

Alright here is my striker.
Its an old file I cut down to about 1/3 the size, and yes it does have a high carbon element
The rock I found out is feldspar, and luckily it is a sparking rock.
I made a video of the practise run, works great!
