Survival on your own |

Have any of you guys ever survived on your own, with maybe a knife and some other minor supplies in the back woods?

now when you say "back woods" could that mean back yard . no I have not but I do sleep outside some times with my trusty dog to protect me I think it's good to start out small and work your way up. the question now is have you?

I joined a local search and rescue team here a few years ago and at the end of the schooling we had to camp in the bush. We could bring food but had to build our own shelter. Unfortunately the course ends in March and the night we went the temp dropped to -32C. Some people actually packed up and went home that night. In the morning the instructor told us that no matter what mark you got in class if you stayed that night you passed!

I have thought about it, but I don't plan on it.
To me the fun part about getting out is doing it "my way". To me that means taking what simple, old fashioned gear I want. I do put in newer items but generally I don't want anything that I can't use forever, or replace. The only exception in a way I have is my Gun's and ammo. I will not be able to replace my ammo, so that is why I plan on ending up with a nice stockpile of 20-50K of rounds. I think that will last me my lifetime.
To me this is what it is all about. But I do try and hone my skills so that if I was in a position of having nothing but a knife and the clothes on my back that i would be able to survive.
Most people think I am crazy when I say I am going to try and build a log cabin by myself with just a couple of axes, wood splitters, saws, and a few other things I still need to pick up.

I'm doing that too.. Buying a lot around here. Only bad part is, if you're cutting the timber yourself, you gotta let it dry for a year..
Don't forget a drawknife!

I have not had the time to do a "get out there with almost nothing and last a few days" trip, but would do it if the oppurtunity came up. I have on two seperate ocassions (winter and summer) made an emergency shelter and slept in it, but food was provided. One of the nights hit 40F and the other was around 20F with strong winds. The first shelter was all natural materials and would have been better but my design was very poor. The second one was a much better design but used trash bags and a thin tarp for the sides which couldn't witstand the winds too well. I woke up every few hours. All the trees were bare, there was a half hour of sunlight left when we arrived, and there were no evergreens nearby or I would have built a much better shelter.

I sometimes will snag my pack and make a run for it. Mostly the day before my days off so I have time. But yeah I have went out on a survival weekends where I only use what I have brought with me (nothing fancy, mostly my Bug out bag) For instance last Friday I decided that I needed one of those weekends to test out the new gear. So I made up a senerio of something going really wrong in the city, making me need to get out for a while. So right after work I left (still in uniform ) and took off. When I got up there I had one change of clothes, and some very basic gear. It ended up not being what it was supose to be as I'm sure some of you read in my campfire post.
