well there for a while there were those AK clone kits for sale for very cheap. You had to do a lot of the work yourself, and they were built from a parts kit. I have a couple that technically "don't exist." I also have a few other "off the books" rifles and pistols that were sold in face to face deals that are 100% legal here. And what they don't know won't hurt me.

I've had unregistered firearms, all I have sold over the years for different reasons than the registration. That is the last thing that I worry about. come to think of it, i've sold 8 firearms in the last 5 years, and still own 8. Not too bad i guess. I would really like to get a .308 bolt action tho. Remington 700's look nice, atleast I like the synthetic version of it. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the miltary use the .308 for their sniper rifles for a long period of time?

I was thinking 7.62, but I'm probably 'dead' wrong on this... (pun intended).

They still use the .308. They only use the .50 for supression, and fortified positions. The .50 is still an anti-vehicle round.
to tell you the truth the .300 winmag is a much better choice than the .308. The two are almost the same balistically, but the 300 is able to shoot through wind much better than .308 can. Which is why the .308s ussually have the turret scopes on them.

7.62 is just a .30cal bullet. So yeah you are correct also.

 | | hahaha, i'm an idiot. Sorry man i totally didn't see your post. |
It's all good. But yeah the 7.62 just comes out to a general .30 cal round. So the 7.62X39, 7.62x54r, 30-30, 30-06, .308, .300, and who ever know how many more guns all are shooting a .30cal round, but it may be longer, or be shaped differently, and has other characteristics like the case, and powder, and bullet weights. Although the 7.62x39 is actually very close to a 30-30. So are you confused yet?

 | | wait a second... isn't a .308 the same as a 7.62? I search'd google and got .308/7.62-MM when searching for the mm equivilant of a .308 |
Actually not quite, they're slightly different rounds, but extremely close. I.E., don't try to load one into a barrell designed for the other... some rifles will accomodate, some won't. I was trained on and I'm used to 7.62 rounds, so I'm sorry for not comparing them accurately to a .308. My goof.

Sorry, I'm probably adding more to the confusion. I like Azarcher's explanation.

I had a 30-30 but i sold it. It was an old bolt that i really didn't have any use for. I mainly use my .257 Roberts (botht he ruger and the browning) for medium sized game (Deer) and the .270 would be more than enough for large game (up to moose). I reload my own ammunition so I know exactly what this gun is capable of dropping, and the .270 has dropped moose with factory ammo (my cousin used it, he is a moose guide)
