I tried a match once but the tick would just squirm and then it died, and it didn't come out. So I just use tweezers.

Man you people are nuts! We have ticks and chiggers here, but only in moderation. Infact I have never had one tick on me, or a chigger attack. *knock on wood* Laughing

Oh yeah!!!

They're everywhere in the southeast U.S., in huge numbers, they're vicious, and they're out for blood.

I'm assuming it's because of a combination of climate, and thick woods everywhere in the South, especially a lot of pine forests as you move west toward Texas.

Azarcher, you're welcome to camp in our homestead forest near Fordyce, AR., as long as you provide a... (as I've called these lil' buggers, from when I was a wee mite Wink)... a "tiggers and chicks" report for the board. Laughing

I recently had my first run in with ticks and I can say that tweezers, worked great on the big ones, but for them little pesky deer ticks, it tended to crush them, so I just use my fingernails now. I have heard that the suffocation and fire methods cause them to spit up and can increase risk for Lyme disease, so I am reluctant to test them. My best method so far is a two parter. First, stop every once in awhile and sweep the ones off you that you see. Second, just have faith that if you don't see any, they aren't on you. It seems to work great for me. Just make sure to do a check when you get to a mirror, but don't worry about them when you are busy.

For those of you who have never experienced Chiggers...RUN. And my word of advice, if you get them, don't scratch. It makes the itching 100x worse.

At the risk of reposting...

chiggers are nearly invisible... wouldn't you agree, Wildthing? They're almost microscopic red mites that burrow under your skin. Within a day they start itchin' and it can get pretty intense. Usually they show up as a small welt, often red or sometimes like a tiny fluid blister that just itches like all get-out.

The traditional remedy is to suffocate them by covering with clear nail polish. It'll kill them, although the itching may continue for awhile. That will eventually subside. Oh, you can't pull them out, not without cutting yourself up... and they're's really no reason to do that anyway. Just use the nail polish.

I don't think chiggers carry any diseases such as Lyme, as far as I know. I've been getting them all my life, and never had a secondary infection problem or disease. They're just simply really annoying, like a bad case of poison ivy.

Spray well with something like "Deep Woods Off" before going in the woods down here... and if you've got the chance, take a hot soaking salt bath after returning home.

Chiggers like tight clothing like socks, your waist, and armpits. Shocked

I rub OFF! Botanicals in those places. Very Happy

I have a very simple way to remove ticks. Grab them by the butt, and pull on them slowly, and slowly increase in strenght. Eventually he'll get tired and let go. He wont puke inside you either I don't think. Cool

After insect repellant, the best option is to find them early, and brush them off. Check often, and if you find one attached, pull slowly(like you said). Eventually it will let go. The sooner you find them and pull them out, the better. If it stays in a while, it makes it harder to pull out as the mouth parts have penetrated deeper.
