That's cool.
I've never made one in large scale....just regular size and small scale, never that big.
Good work.

Thanks guys.
That took over an hour i'd say. It was good, because it gave me something to do.

That's a major key in survival....even if the trap doesn't work, you can keep your mind active and keep from going crazy.
You get an A for today.

OK, I rigged up my trap. It's a springpole snare. At first I tried to pull a branch down, but it was too hard to do all by myself so I changed my plan. I strung the rope over a branch and tied a log on the end with a timber hitch. There were a few problems. My stake was too far from the base of the tree, and there was too much line from my stake to my snare. Thus resulting in about 2" of air. I tried it on a log and the trigger worked fine, I just didn't get it elevated enough. Well there's always a next time.

Besides the fact that it was your first time, the main problem is that the tree is a little on the large side.
A small sapling would be much better suited for the spring pole snare.
But the more you practice, the more you'll understand about it and the better you'll get.
Keep at it.

Yeah, I actually tried it again. I'd say the counterweight is a little small though. With the rope attached to a log weight instead of a sapling as a spring you'd be able to send something heavy up a tree. Which would be like a trap you always see on tv that hauls a guy up by his ankle.

Ohhh....excuse me. I misunderstood.
I see what you mean now. You're using the tree as a pulley and the log as a counterweight. There's only one problem with that....it's not a spring pole snare anymore.
I understand you like the counterweight, but I would prefer a good stout tree to do the yanking. Personal preference.
It is possible though to use a larger tree as a spring...they can be made big and strong enough to catch bear. Not easy, but possible. A little overkill for a survival situation, but fascinating to think about, nonetheless.
Counterweights and springs both have their pros and cons, so it all boils down to what you prefer, I guess.

It would be nice to have another pair of helping hands. I might try the springpole with my cousin. I'll walk on the branch to bend it down while he sets the trigger.

Just so you know, that is a recipe for disaster, so be careful.

Nah, I know that tree like the back of my hand. Besides if my feet slip I'm always hanging on something with my hands.

Today I made a normal sized figure 4 trap, which I may give to my aunt to get a chipmunk. I also tried my counterweight snare with a bigger log. Worked good.
