Good job. Cool

They are not easy to make at first. Trust me, I've made plenty.

Advice for the next one: put more vent holes but make them about half the size you have there.

**DISCLAIMER TO WHOEVER READS THIS**
THE FOLLOWING IS GENERAL ADVICE THAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM EXPERIENCE. IF YOU SET YOUR HOUSE ON FIRE, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE.

Go buy some denatured alcohol at Wal-Mart(paint department), and find a safe place to use your stove. Look for a low light area out of the house and out of the wind with a smooth, flat surface(a garage floor or similar structure would be ideal). I use a tiny pie pan under the stove in case the fuel spills(you should use a big pie pan, though). If the fire gets out of control for any reason, lit denatured alcohol will stay lit for a little while when water is poured on it. Once enough water mixes with the alcohol, the flame will die. BE CAREFUL!! I keep a bucket of water right next to me. When you pour the fuel out of the can, be careful to not spill it. If you do, clean it up. Depending on where it is spilled and how much, diluting it with lots of water is usually the best option(half a gallon is plenty for the amount of fuel that the stove holds). A good way to avoid spills is to measure how much fuel the stove holds. I simply go to the sink and put enough water in it to make it overflow. Pour out the remaining water into a small container(I use a tiny scoop). This is the maximum the stove can hold before spilling. Do not put more than this amount into your stove(slightly less would be safer). After measuring the fuel out, close the fuel can and move it aside before you light the stove(6 feet is safe distance). Light it with a match or kitchen lighter(the kind most people use to light candles) at first. It can be lit with a spark from a firesteel or mag/flint stick, but you have to get a big enough spark to land in the right place and quickly move your hands out of the way when the fuel ignites. It depends on your dexterity. It is very easy to knock the stove over when trying this. If anybody has called you fumble fingers, do not try this.

Depending on how the rest of it is put together, it should run just fine. There needs to be room for air to get in where the top outer piece fits into the bottom piece. If it is too tight, no air will get into the combustion chamber(that's the part between the inner wall and the top piece). No air equals no combustion with a pot on top. In this scenario, the fuel will burn in the middle of it where you light it and not in the vents. If it can get air into the combustion chamber, shortly after you light it in the middle the vents will catch and you can put a small pot on top(not a great big one) to boil water. If the stove doesn't work right, wait for it to cool down after using it before you touch it. After it cools down, I normally dunk it(stove and leftover fuel) in a bucket of water to safely dispose of the fuel.

^I could write a manual on these things. Laughing

I kind of threw my thoughts into all that, so if I think of anything else, I'll post again. Smile

If you are confused about anything, ask questions. Dealing with flammable liquids is a little different than starting fires with twigs and grass. Use plenty of caution.

great post, flash. If you, or anyone else, would be able to take a few pictures of the process it would be great!

Thanks.

I don't know that I'll be able to. It's such a hassle to snap, upload, and post just a couple pictures, there's no way I'd be able to take pictures of the whole process. And I've been so busy lately, my house seems like a strange place. Laughing

What all do you want pictures of, anyway?

Is there something wrong with the pictures at the start of the thread? Or are you referring to just lighting and using the stove?

I didn't realise we were on page 3. My mistake. I read how he set it up and just assumed we were starting a new thread... whops!
