How to make a halcon stove |
|
The halcon stove is a small stove you can make out of an old pop can. It was created by Alan Halcon, who is a master at the handrill. By adding some rubbing alchol you can start a fire and it will work as a small camp stove. Some people have been having difficulty with this design so I decided to make a detailed tutorial. I have decided to keep the pictures large so that you can see the detail easier.
Here is how it's made:
First you will need a few items. This can be done using a pop can and a multi-tool, but for the sake of keeping it simple we are going use a few more items.
These are the items I used:
- A ruler
- A Marker
- A beer can (Any kind of can will work just fine)
- Multi-tool and/or Swiss Army knife
- Scissors
The First step is to take your can and put up upright. Now measure one inch from the bottom up, mark it down. Do this around the can then just connect the dots.
The now do the same thing to the top of the can, but measure 1 1/2 inches. Then do the same as the last step, connect the dots etc.
Next you have to make the vent holes for the gas to escape. You can use any knife but the small blade on the Swiss Army Knife works the best. Poke it the knife a little and rotate the blade inside to make the hole wider.
This next step is a little tricky. The purpose is to get the middle part of the top of the can to come out. Take the small blade on the Swiss army Knife and scor a path in which you want to cut the can on top of the can. Go around about 2-3 times on the same path. Now take the knife and make a hole in the path. Then take you multitool and start prying out the centre with the pliers (Like on the picture below).
Next, cut along the 2 black lines we made ealier. Cut all the way around so that you have three parts.
Now you have three parts. The top, bottom and center.
Now you want to make the middle part work properly. Use the scissors to make one edge nice and smooth. And then measure the strip so that it is 1 7/8 inches wide.
Once you have the strip the right size, take it and put it into the top part of the can. You should be able ot easlily place it inside (The middle strip woll overlap a little on one spot).
Next cut 4 notches on the strip you just placed inside the top, no size imperticular. Once your done it should look like a castle.
The next step is to curl the bottom part (ruffle). Use your thumb to ruffle the sides, and then put it inside the top part.
FInally, put the bottom inside the top, and it should look like this.
Here is a video on how to light it without it going out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ-RmI3g_c4
TIPS ON LIGHTING IT:
1) Use 99% alchol as opposed to 70%, it will be easier.
2) Pour in just a little amount on your first time, to get the hang of it
3) Do this in the batroom, kitchen or a place with water
4) Take a match and drop it inside, this will protect you from the flame, ts safe and effective
5) Once lit, turn the lights off
6) Now you can see well, let it burn 30+ seconds at least
7) After that time you should see the jets starting to burn
Then slowly lower your pot onto the stove, very slow
9) As you lower it the jets will take on the full flame, and they should work constantly

Here it is
It's a little shorter than it was suppose to be, but I think it'll be fine.
It's still wet from cleaning, so I'll try it later

For those of you having problems with the flame just burning in the middle, I will shoot a video asap about how to get the vents on the side to work. it is a little tricky at times but eventually you will get it.

That’s pretty cool Trooper. The video really made the tutorial. I’ve seen the stoves before but never in action.

Yep, big thanks TrooperMax!
You've inspired me to make one of these...
...think I'll use a Guinness can! I'll pop one open this afternoon.

There's 2 vids... one that Trooper put in his original post, and then one that Turd did, a couple of posts above. Click on Turd's "Here..." and the vid should start.

TIPS ON LIGHTING IT:
1) Use 99% alchol as opposed to 70%, it will be easier.
|
My girlfriend suggested, in multi-use survivor-fashion, to use grain alcohol/ Everclear... that way you can light your stove... and then get lit yourself!
Sarah is sooo smart!
