Finally broke down and bought a telescopic rod. It came with the rod, reel, some floaters, a small tackel container, some hooks, swivels, weights, and some rubber lures. Extends from 17.5 inches out to 4'6".

well i took off the reel that came with the rod and put on my old (really old) abu garcia cardinal reel. I hae never (knock on wood) had any trouble with this reel. For a small reel it holds a lot of line (160 yards of 6 pound test) which is more then enough for what I need. It also has a rear drag setup which I like becuase if you put it too loose the spool doesn't fall off the reel (which has happened to me with some top drag setups) Put a new line on it, some stren 6 pound test, and i'm ready to go on the 15th of april.

Great compact rod. Great for hiking !.  Been thinking of getting one myself for the Backpack.
