Survival Weekend |
|
My buddy and I decided to try some survival techniques two weekends ago. He had an old parashute that we managed to turn into a tipi.
The Temp was about -6c and no snow which was fine for working. But once you stopped you soon felt the cold. We only had a blue foam pad and a wool blanket for sleeping (each) so keeping the fire going all night was the main goal.
We stocked up on fire wood. A little overkill as we didn't use half that pile.
We stayed rather warm and slept for about an hour at a time before the fire needed stoking. You may notice that the Tipi is not touching the ground. This is important because there is a clear plastic inner wall that allows a draft to come in and help vent the tipi. The first time we tried this (blue tarps) we had to lay on the ground the entire time due to the smoke.
Overall - Weekend was a success!!!

That’s pretty cool.
Think if you lifted up only one small area it would be enough to vent the fire properly? Maybe dig a trench from the outside up to the fire to bring in air for it. Seems as though you should be able to limit the air flow into the tipi to just enough to keep the fire burning and venting so you don’t loose to much heat.

Good idea TommasisX. We'll try the trench next time. Although, we kept the inner wall above our heads when sitting so we didn't notice the cool air coming in. Getting the smoke out was the important thing this time around.
CedroneS, it took about 1.5 hour to setup. We saved time with the spars because we were at a scout camp and they had hundreds pre-cut to choose from. Not a true survival situation but we didn't want to kill trees un-necessarily.

Cool. Yeah the trench is a good idea. I coverd my tipi and the fire was weak but a trench made all the differnce.
All I did was make a trench about 3/4 of a foot wide from the outside to the base of the fire, just beside the fire. I then coverd the trench with sticks and spuce and made a big opening outside for intake and a little outtake vent beside the fire. It did help
