Unexpected Survival Situation |
|
So here’s the deal:
The Wife told you if you went out drinking and carousing with your boozin’ buddy’s all night one more time, she was going to do something to you you’d severely regret. You figured this meant she’s kill ya dead. But no, you wake up late in the day to find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing but trees as far as your blurry, blood shot eyes can see.
After a couple minutes you come to your senses and realize this isn’t some alcohol induced nightmare. You start to appraise your situation. It’s early spring, there are still patches of snow on the ground and you have an hour, maybe a little more, of daylight left. There are rain clouds moving in and a cold breeze is starting to pick up. The terrain is hilly of which you’re on the top of one. Through the trees you can just make out a small body of water down in a low area maybe half a mile away. This is good since you’re so dehydrated from all that alcohol you believe you could drink it dry. You soon realize the only thing you can hear is the sound of the wind rustling through the trees. No cars, no planes in the sky, not even that usual throbbing sound in your head you get after drinking all night.
As you stand there taking it all in, you begin to wonder just where you are. The last thing you remember is doing shots and someone saying it was 5 in the morning so everyone should get home before they got into trouble with their old ladies. It’s now at least 5 in the evening. This means the wife had maybe twelve hours to get you where you are now. But how? If she drove you then there would have to be a road real close. But then you remember, her brother, who hates your guts, is a helicopter pilot and probably dropped you on top of this hill as far away from civilization as he could get. It’s probably somewhere in Canada since he makes his money dropping hunters into the bush there. Terrain he’s familiar with but you’re not.
So as you still stand there, you begin to wonder how you’re going to get your bacon out of the fire this time. You pull up your pants from around your ankles and begin to go through your pockets to see what you have. Besides the cloths on your back (luckily it’s cold weather wear), you soon find you have only two things on you, no wallet, no keys, nothing but a harmonica (you’re sure you really rocked the house last night) and a……………..
Now’s the part that gets fun. You get to tell us which of the items listed below, you think would be best to have in this situation and why.
1. A Coghlan’s candle lantern with three (3) teacup candles in it and a match for each.
2. A magnesium fire starter with flint rod on the side and a pen knife on the chain.
3. A compass.
4. An emergency poncho with an attached hood.
5. A 9’x12’ plastic painter’s drop cloth (you were setting up to paint your bar when your buddies came over).
6. A multi tool.
7. A .22 pistol with one bullet.
8. A picture of your wife and brother-in-law pointing toward the camera and laughing.
Choose only one and choose wisely this time ya freakin’ drunk.

In the way of Les, I'd have to go with the Multi-Tool

Man Tom this is the best situation ive ever read good job man, not only funny but realistic in a way (with the items).
Well hell, its getting dark so there is no time to make shelter, I would choose:
. A magnesium fire starter with flint rod on the side and a pen knife on the chain.
I believe gathering some deadfirewood and starting a fire would be the best option to make it through the night. Since it might rain there is a chance of getting hypothermia. So First of all i would find a sport under a big tree, that could at least shed some of the rain. I would them proceed to make a big hot fire beside the tree and myself. Covering it with a big log will keep it burning even if its raining. For the time remining it could gather wood for the fire for the night and cover myself with brances with leaves for the night.
Cool situation!

I choose muti tool. It makes me a shelter, i can fasten the tool to a stick & have a spear for fishing.
And as far as fire, well, just find a rock that spark's, or make a fire bow . It is to me thee most important tool to have on your belt or in your pocket.

I would take the magnesium fire starter and pen knife as well. Gotta have that fire , and I don't want to worry about it every time it goes out. The pen knife would come in handy for other things as well...

Well mainly cause that'd be the most useful. I mean, Its not a compass, but if you have No clue where you are, your probably gonna be there for awhile, Therefore, A multi-tool makes perfect sense.

Mag fire starter and pen knife. Fire would be my biggest concern to surviving the night. another thing, how come you didnt include a picture of a picture of your wife and her brother laughing at you in your picture. i never want to say picture again....picture.

My wife was adopted. No brothers. I don’t have a gun either.

My Spin on this... |
|
I would also take the fire starter. I would find a tree off the hill or at least on the side away from the wind to sit under, collect firewood I could break by hand and start my fire. I'd also try to fashion some kind of bucket to collect rain water with if I could. Hunker down and try to keep warm.
In the morning I'd start building my brand new log cabin by the water source at the bottom of the hill and live out my days in the wilderness. That B**** could kiss my a**!!!

defonatly the firestarter and pen knife. Fire would be taken care of for a long time, also you could use the pen knife to help make a shelter i guess. Kinda light and may break off under any amount of pressure thoe so you'd have to be carefull. also you could try to either rig it up to a stick to make a fishing spear or use it to sharpen the end of a stick to make into a spear. ummmm yea that's about it really. I'd rather the multi tool but fire would be so much easy'r made withe the firesteel i'd have to pick it.

I, too, picked the firestarter, even though it no longer includes a complimentary knife. With trees around, it should be possible to rig up some kind of shelter without tools.

I'd take the pistol, and the photo of the two. The photo would keep me going until I got the chance to use the pistol at a later date.
But really, I would choose the mag stick also. With it I know I could start a fire everytime, rain or shine. I would then start a fire as soon as possible because who knows how much time I really have until dark. Then the next morning I would start towards the water. Once there, I would build three of the largest fires that those Canadians have ever seen so I would be rescued. Then, I would hunt those two down and make sure they get locked up for the rest of my life.

You know what, the multitool because every thing I need can be had with one. Plus, I say sit tight and wait. Sure shes pissed, but anyone with a Long term girlfriend or a wife knows they eventually get over it. Could you imagine what she would fell like when she finds out you've died out in the wilderness because of her.
Yeah, sit tight and wait it out. make your self comfy and watch the clouds.

Initially for me it would be a choice between the firestarter and multitool. Ultimately I choose the multitool because of it's multi-uses in many situations, as opposed to the firestarter without the pen knife. A multitool opens up many options, meaning adaptability for various unpredictable situations.
Now, with that said... I actually did consider the picture for a moment. Les has said several times that the key to survival, the only thing we really need, is the will to live. The picture would definitely fire up my adrenaline, metabolism, and sheer anger... this psychological "survival tool" might prove the most important item for igniting within me with the will to live and survive, for better or for worse. Cause and gird me to have a "no way I'm going to die" attitude, help me to focus and become a driven man. Hence, completely and efficiently focused on my survival. A very important mental attitude. Again, for better or for worse.
