Knife and/or Multi-tool. Very usefull in a survival situation.

Magnesium flint stick. Great backup firestarter.
Will work for a couple thousand fires, just shave enough magnesium off with your knife at a 90 degree angle to the magnesium to cover a quarter and then use the spine of your knife to strike the flint. Aim the spark to ignight the magnesium. My best results were when i had the magnesium on top of tinder and also with some tinder over it.

Folding saw. Great for gathering shelter material and firewood. Also is very light but still effective.

Sweedish firesteel. Great backup fire starter. Put some dry grass/bark/other tinder together into a bundle and then use the steel striker on the flint to create 3000 degree sparks. A long slow strike works best.

Survival (space) blanket. not the best thing in the world for a blanket, you pretty much have to get them right onto your skin to keep the heat in. BUT if you make a shelter and put this on the inside of it (les did this in the rocky mountain episode) you have a shelter that will reflect heat from you and/or your fire back down to you. make sure to put a lot of supports under it if you using it for this to keep it from ripping. you can get more durable ones then this but i would still want to put a lot of support anyway. Cover them up with evergreen boughs and youve got yourself a pretty dry shelter started...

I think Rope is manditory in any backpack or Kit. This is 80 ft, of good rope. Many,many use'es out in the bush.

First Aid Kit. I suggest getting a decent one and then adding things to it. This is a small one that I bought, took out things i didn't want then added a bunch that i did. Great to have for when you or someone else gets hurt.

Flashlight. Can be used at night to see your trail or for signalling. this is a renewable energy light that has a strobe signal light feature. Sorry bout the bad pic.

Snare wire. Great for making traps for rabbits/squirrels/birds (see traps section for details). also could be used to make a shelter really strong.

Winter hat. Even in the summer it can get really cold at night and a winter hat sure makes things a little bit more barable.

Emergency Candles. Sometimes its really hard to start a fire, but if you have this at least you'll have light. Also they are great for transporting a flame

A headlamp is great at night, expeically if you have to do something. If you cant sleep you can gather wood, or work on your shelter or whatever. Although I highly recmond a LED as opposed to the old type of bulb. Also GERBER seems to have the best kind for what I can see.

Although not a vital item, good to have never the less. GREAT signaling at night time. I do recomend having at least one, but do not just throw it into your pack. I suggest cramming it into something hard like a copper pipe, so it wont activate.

A strobe is yet antoehr good signaling device. However i suggest getting a headlamp that has that function to reduce the amount of gear you have.

One of the most useful items I own. Great for keeping warm, and making shelters. Covering up firewood, etc.

Great for the wintertime. I got a pair of these in my kit for winter.
(No coghlan, I just use this company as an expample for pictures)
