Ok guys, what about a topic for things you should enclude when putting together a survival kit. I think this would go well with the begginers survival post. Lemmy know what you think should be in a kit, What's in yours, and what you think should be added.

I'm not even going to post mine, because Max will come along and show me up! Hey max, post us those pics and a complete inventory! His kit is great, You'd think he was a pro!

tibby, as tropu will tell you this isn't a place for showing up people. Rather it's a place where we can all see what each other is carying and maby adjust our kits accordingly.

lol, but after seeing Max's kit, I was VERY impressed! I'm suppose to be a professional-in-training, and I think, kits vs kit, he would survive longer! I'm going to try and mimic it!

The only thing I would add is duck tape, and a flora guild, if you know the area you are going into.

basicly what i was looking for here is what you need to include. i could list off the things in mine but there is already a post coviering "your gear". For a beginner i'd say a good knife or multi-tool, and if you can both! also a couple methods to make fire. Wooden matches, lighters, and backups methods like firesteel and/or magnesium flint stick. Cordage is good and will help in making a shelter or traps. a folding saw and/or a hatchet are also great tools for gathering fire wood and shelter materials. What else can you guys think of as "must haves" for a good kit?

lol, I know, I know. That was a good list, buddy. I would add a Rope, and a few MREs (just in case), to that list. Rope, in the hands of someone with proper training, can be extremely useful!

In addition to knife matches and flint. Even when traveling light I carry a small fanny pack that has some first aid items bandaids, some alcohol swabs, and tape to close up a gash with , some people us super glue for closing cuts. In addition I have nylon twine for cordage, a few fishing hooks and some line, a large plastic garbage bag to use as a rain cover or to help make a dry shelter with and a stainless steel cup (to boil water) in stuffed with the above and a few bullion cubes. plus a water bottle, compus and a map folded in my pocket.

But nomally I use a day pack with a lot more stuff in it.

i forgot about the super glue thing. Thing about the glue is it seass in things as well so cleaning the cut well is a must, but everyone should clean thier cuts well anyway... I also forgot to put a first aid kit in my post.. it's in my bag thoe!

Some thing else that I always carry but didn't mention is a flashlight . I have a small one that fits in my front pants pocket and a Mini Mag on my belt. Every since taking the wrong fork in the trail one time and then making our way back to our vehicle on a dark moonless night by the light given off from an Indiglo watch I always carry the flaslights. The Indiglo watch actually worked fairly well and I still wear one.

P.S. The nylon twine I mentioned early works well for a bow drill string to start a fire with it seemed to hold up longer that a leather shoe lace does.

I could post ym gear but it is already up in your gear. However it would be good to post pictures of just single itesm in one thread. I got a great idea i'll start of 2 threads which are interlinked but one is talk only one is pic only.

Get some Dermabond. Super glue is toxic, and non-sterile. It is chemically similar to super glue, but it isn't poison, they added disinfectants to it, and they make it aseptically.

Quikclot is also pretty good to carry, too. If the laceration is to much for the Dermabond to hand, QC will stop the bleeding, so you and cover it up, and get help.

^ True. I've heard of many cases where people died from internal infection onc ethe wound was sealed. This also happens quite often with heavy burns. There was this Russian plane that crashed in the show "May Day" which is a true story re-cap. Most of the passenges that died where from infection. Of course this can be hard to control expecially in a burn situation. But in simple cuts or scrapes, taking that step and sucking up the pain to clean a fresh wound, could save your life!

The problem with that is that the glue itself is not sterile, AND it is toxic. There is a chance the glue itself could exacerbate the problem. Don't take shortcuts with your health. The whole "Superglue and duck tape" first aid concept is a HORRIBLE concept, and should ONLY be used in extreme emergencies. Don't go minimalistic on your first aid! There is no reason why you can't have a small first aid kit with proper medical supplies in it.

I agree the last thing you want to be dumping into a clean wound is glue. You may as well take some arm & hammer and just pack it in there. But honestly, the whole point of the first aid kit to to be ready and have the supplies, rather then having to resort to MaCGyverisms

Well said, Troop. The reason for a Kit is so you don't have to use super glue and duck tape and torn sleeves and whiskey, and all of the other infamous tools used in McGyver, back country first aid! IT might cost a little bit more, but what price can you put on your health?
