Yeah, rain gear can be worth it's weight. If it rains, that is!
We've been under a flash flood watch for about a week(they just keep extending it), but we haven't gotten much rain. Everywhere else it just getting hammered. 8 people have already died in Georgia. I've been carrying around my rain jacket for a while and I only used it once. I'll be glad when I don't have to lug it around campus anymore.
But anyway, yeah, rain gear is a great thing to have
Water stones are sweet, too. Dave can vouch for that.

Summer last year was one severe storm out of the blue after another. This summer wasn't a whole lot different. So now even if I'm just going for a stroll in a local park I carry one of those cheap emergency ponchos at the very least.

Yeah, I need to carry one of those, but my backpack isn't big enough. I usually have a couple classes worth of books, and always my bike repair stuff. I can only bring my computer when I don't have more than one class. I need to get a bigger backpack. But those Swiss ones are about $60! I don't really want to sink that much money in one, but it's probably worth it. Also, with more room, I would have room for a FAK and maybe a small PSK.
Heck, what am I doing in this thread? I could make my small PSK for the thread Daffy started to put in my backpack!
Excuse me while I go make a list of stuff I'm going to put in my kit.

well, didnt buy the rain gear or the wet stones but i did buy a coghlans folding stove and a folding camp grill the grill is actually for fishing trips as it is to awkward to fit in my pack so i put it in my car kit that I keep in rubbermaid tub in my santa fe as to the rain gear i do have a emergency slicker like the one you guys were just talking about and a heavier poncho in the car kit but am really more looking for the complete suit (pants and a jacket). am really interested in the military issue ones sold at this surplus shop in town the only thing is I hate paying that much money for used clothing even if it real good quality.Ahhh maybe I'll use the money and just hit the lake for the day on saturday the weather here is uncommonly warm right now today hit 32 C its been like that for over a week its crazy

Sounds good, d.

I have one. That's what my Camelbak is for.
I'm talking about EDC for college. I've seen a lot of people with those Swiss Gear Wenger Austin Laptop backpacks. That's the one I want.
I think I'll check one out at Wal-Mart and see if I like it. Might see what other kinds they have, too.
I bought a Belkin Larchmont Laptop Backpack back at the beginning of summer. It was okay during my summer college courses because it was just one class a day(meaning one book and a notebook) and then my laptop. I loved it and it worked fine. But now, most days it is jammed full and heavy as all heck. I need more room!
As you can see, it is fairly streamlined(making it smaller). It has a main compartment with a padded slot for a laptop, and room for a couple books. It isn't meant to carry all the crap I need to put in it: multiple books, bike repair kit including mini-pump and small crescent wrench, laptop on some days, PSK, FAK, multitool, daily planner, calculator, etc... It has a front pouch but it can't hold much. Those Swiss ones have pockets and pouches out the wazoo!

Yeah, thankfully I got a Frogg Togg rain suit for Christmas last year. That's what I've been carrying on the days that is has threatened to rain.
(I just now noticed that they have the sound of rain on their home page. Turn your sound up if you can't hear it.)
If I had a bigger backpack, I could probably carry my rain jacket whenever I might need it. I tend to not take it because I have to tie it around my waist unless there is just one book in my backpack.
Sorry if it seems like I've hijacked this thread but it is about things in my EDC kit that I'm trying to get worked out.
I think it's time for a new purchase!!

I have used a single wool blanket down to 40 degrees and been comfy, if you would wear a jacket and long johns with it I bet you could get down to 20 easy... With a reflector fire and now wind, 0 to -10.... Just my guess here...
