Tipis, yurts and other shelter |
|
This thread is for other shelters that arnt used specifically for emergency surivival but rather used as homes for people who live like the first nations. For example a yurt is a tent like structure that is easy to transport but opens up very large. The Mongolians are the primary people who used this shelter as there are no tress in their enviroment. However this shelter takes lots of work and time to build so it is highly unrealistic to classify it as a survival shelter.
A tipi can be used as a survival shelter but is also uncommon in an emergency. Making a tipi requires animal hide to cover it up, however animal hide has been replaced with canvas and tarps in this day and age. Primative nations still live in tipis but they are also not an ideal survival shelter.
If anyone has any tips to add on to these shelters to make them effectivly please share

I had a guy at work that went on an extended vacation to Southeast Asia, China, Tibet, and Mongolia. When he went to Mongolia, the "hotel" he stayed at was just a bunch of Yurts. It looked pretty cool actually! They are rather large!!!

Yeah they are very large. Being semi-nomadic they have perfected them so they are as light and large as possible, like a really good b.o.b

i think that is what's on it now. i'd prefer a hinged door made of wood tho. the hinges could be made with wood too as to keep it rustick (sp?)

Very creative fence. No matter where you are its good to shelter yourself not only from the elements but from wild animals too. Not so much in North America as in Africa or Austria or some sort of tropical location, but threats do exist.

Well idiot is a harsh world but inexpeiance would cover it. When makign these shelters you have to make sure the wind sint going in the dirrection of your door, that way the shelter becomes a wind tunnel, and ultimatly becomes very smokey

when making a teepee how would you tie the part where the structural poles meet without cordage?
