I would think once you have a rolling boil, 5 minutes would be more than enufe to kill most nasty things.

All you need to neutralize the bacteria in your water is to bring it to a rolling boil. Cool

I've been told that you only need to bring it to a boil and that's what I believe. I heard that it just a liability issue that some organizations recommend anywhere from one minute to 30 minutes. I haven't read much research on it. Does anyone know of any?

Hi guys:
The nasties like Giardia lamblia,Cryptosporidium,e-coli,listeria can all be killed by a rolling boil. No specific time period is required if the water boils.
The Giardia is especially tough to kill with chemical treatment like bleach or iodine. When using chemical treatments, remember that the colder the water is that's being treated, the longer you should let it do its work before drinking.
The idea of specific boiling times has often been misinterpreted from the fact that it does indeed take longer to boil water at higher altitudes, but once you get it boiling you don't need to keep it at that temperature for any set amount of time.
I don't know if any of you have ever had a drink of water that has been boiled over a fire, but it doesn't taste real good Crying or Very sad .
If you have the means to pour it back & forth between 2 clean containers before you drink, it will be "re oxigenated" & taste more like water.
It also cools off quiker by doing that.
