well this post has got me thinking. We now have hand crank flashlights hitting stores everywhere, hand crank radios, whats next? And why? Is it consumer interest or is someone preparing us for something bigger.

If anyone is going to The Source, they had better hurry. They are closing most of them down. I was in the one near me yesterday and everything was 50% off. Of course, all the good stuff was gone.

I replaced the incandescent bulb with a 3mm white LED and added 4 bright blue smd LEDs to light up the display

Remember to limit the current with a resistor
At princess auto they have these crank chargers:
They have a battery pack (that sucks) and a circuit board in there.
I removed the battery pack and modified the circuit to output the power directly.
It puts out ~2 amps (short circuit) and ~9 volts (open circuit) .
Thats a lot of power IMO

I almost bought the "red cross" radio the other day. It was like $50 or so too, and like you said it noted that it would charge cell phones. I may go back and pick one up this weekend before I go to work.
Turd how did you change the lights, and install the display? That sounds like an awsome project to me.

For the flashlight on the radio, I just pull the incandescent bulb out and put a 3mm white LED in, along with a resister so it doesn't cook it's self.
Front of the flashlight.
Resister under some heat shrink tubing.
For the display, all I did was glue in a PCB (printed circuit board) that I found in a cell-phone, it had four smd (surface mount devise) LEDs on it, along with a resister.
Blue smd LEDs
Sorry for the crappy pics
