Hello All!
As I write this I am 38,000 feet in the air returning from a shoot for Discovery US in Whistler BC. Yes I did get in some skiing and yes it was amazing!! (Albeit embarrassing that my two kids – ten and eight are both faster and crazier skiers than me!!),
In the last few months it would seem that the success of Survivorman (and some new exciting projects called Stroud’s Legends and Stroud…Off The Grid) is ramping up to reach its tipp! ing point. At least this is what I am hoping.,
I feel I must ask for your patience regarding more Survivorman shows. The (enjoyable) consequences of the unexpected success of the first run of shows have caught me and my associates at Survivorman Productions off guard. That’s why thus far we only have the DVD box set of the first season and my films Snowshoes and Solitude and Stranded along with my debut CD available for sale. We will do our best to get some t-shirts and other Survivorman keepsakes available as soon as our small team can make it all happen. I know – it should be easy but…..well the deal still rests mostly on my shoulders and here’s what’s been happening:,
You may recall my two hour special for OLN entitled ‘Stroud…Off The Grid’ – about my families move to self sufficiency with solar power, wind power, composting toilet and rain harvesting etc.? Well it’s still full steam ahead but the new air-date will be likely set ! for sometime in September. We battled a very freaky bit of win! ter weat her, which delayed us considerably. To add to my delays has been the fantastic success of Survivorman south of the border. It has become the highest rated show in the history of The Science Channel (just, by-the-way, as it has become the most popular show here in Canada on OLN). Then the Discovery Channel (US) chopped it into half hour versions and aired it on the main Discovery Channel and once again the ratings are fantastic. A short while ago it was the highest rated show of the night surpassing Myth Busters – and this, even though many viewers are frustrated that they can’t see the whole hour if they don’t have the Science Channel. (Frustrated in that good kind of way that they just want to see more!). ,
So……as a result of all that I have been busy for the past month or more:,
A) guest hosting on a series for Discovery US called ‘I Shouldn’t Be Alive – part 2 – The Science of Survival) – (shot in Colorado and England where they p! ut me in a chamber and did hypothermia and frostbite testing on me).,
B) Hosting a series of vignettes for Discovery US/Disney about surviving Mount Everest for a documentary they produced about Disney’s new ride Expedition Everest. This is what I am returning from right now.,
C) Preparing to shoot a one-hour special I created called Urban Disaster Survival about what to do in a situation like New Orleans (shooting mid-March),
D) Preparing to secure a second run of Survivorman (OLN is already happily on board for a second season),
E) Developing a new series called ‘Stroud’s Legends’,
F) Trying hard to get back to finishing a new CD I am recording with Canadian hit makers ‘The Northern Pikes’.,
G) Negotiating with a major publishing company for a book series on Survivorman, Off The Grid and more.,
H) oh yeah – did I mention building our cabin in the woods??,
So here’s the ! deal; you’ll know soon if Survivorman is a go for a second s! eason, y ou’ll know soon if ‘Stroud’s Legends’ is a go for a debut season, ‘Stroud’s…Off The Grid’ is coming in September in Canada and you’ll know soon if it is a go south of the border and you should expect a new CD out before the summer sun gets hot.,
Oh yeah – what is that ever present question I keep getting?? Where will the new Survivorman shows be shot? Well, likely in Australia, South America, Alaska, and NW Pacific Coast…at least that is where I am thinking currently.,
With so much happening one of my obvious challenges is to continually network until I have a strong team together for future developments. So the word for today folks; hang in there – more shows coming as soon as I can physically pull it all off!,
Take care, keep adventuring, keep exploring and get out to wildness whenever possible.,
Oh yeah – one more thing; don’t forget to pick up a copy of the March issue of Explore magazine (Canada) f! or a good piece on Survivorman.,
Sincerely,
Les Stroud
