Lawenforcement.
They DID specify to a more lawenforcement side of knife and tool owners, but that changed as the went down hill companywise.
Though their multitools are still nice tools and yes a saw is nice to have, use a Blast daily, and sometimes wear my wave, but as of rite now thats still in Nova Scotia. |
I'll say that I have 3 *real* saws for the bush: 2 folding, and 1 with a sheath. I don't know what it is with *threes* because I seem to have 3 of everything
But that said, I don't have those folders and sheathed saws on my person for EDC, so that's the difference. Never know when that saw in the Wave will come in handy for something or other, although my bigger saws make the Wave saw look like small change when it comes to cutting wood
For example, if you want to take down a sappling, they bend like rubber bands. If you really need to have one for some reason, any saw works much better than a knife in my personal experience, even the Wave saw. So I can't say the Gerber model I have without the saw feature is my favorite multitool for that simple reason.
IIRC...Les Stroud himself uses/carries a Wave? I found that out AFTER I already bought mine

It's the album cover for the band Mickey 3D, but it's not a band member.

thats true.
I dont know what gerber is putting out QC wise these days, but about 5 years ago I bought a gerber (scout model) I cant remember but, its the base model and has the one handed open feature. I love that feature from gerber, its much better than swinging a leatherman around, trying to get it open. and that gerber has been going for the last 5 years, and its still strong.

Which of the tools in your multi tool do you use the most?
When I carried one,I used the saw more than any of the others.
Do you find that you use the pliers alot?
I can't recall needing the pliers outside at all,so I gave my Wave to my son. I still have a PST & a Kick, but I hardly ever use them for outside stuff.
I carry a SAK with a saw now.
I know...BLASPHEMY !!!
I know they're top quality tools, but I've never really needed the pliers.
Give me some ideas of what you use yours for & maybe I'll get that sucker back from him.
Thanks in advance for not lynching me

For me its is my pliers and saw, but the Wave and Blast I find too heavy, so a SAK camper and either gerber 400 compact or leatherman Kick are with me. I do alot of eletrical work, and messing with wires all day I find myself using the pliers, and sometimes the knife.
But while camping, aside from taking hot things off the fire, which can be done with a stick just as eaisly (if theres a handle on the can) I dont use the pliers no.

Although I don't use it very often, I find myself using the pliers and knife most.

Thanks for the replies so far Fonly & Kim.
I'll probably let my son keep the Wave. It's a good tool & he'll use it I'm sure.
Ever since I took the serrations off of my Vic Fireman,I've been using it more & more.
It was okay as it was , but I'm just not a serrated kind of guy.

I'm looking into getting a wave instead of a folder.

Congrats.
It will serve you well.
Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for it?

I am surprised that I don't see more Victorinox multitools in use. I gave all of mine away
IIRC I paid something around $80 US for my Leatherman Wave a long time ago. It is very practical, and I'm always reaching for it to do something or other.
I do however miss my Swiss Army Officer Victorinox. I gave it to one of my nieces. She says she uses it all the time. I certainly hope so because that was a precision instrument.
I have a Gerber and a Schrade multitool also (remember I have 3 of everything). Between those two, the Schrade is the the better tool IMO. Each to his own, but I wear the Wave. The other two are in bug out bags.
