Well I've been thinking, once I get out of the air force I can live wherever I want really. One of the places I keep thinking of is Canada. I really like being in the north, the weather's better, and the woods are more familiar to me. Anyway, I had a few questions for you canadians here.

What's the difference in laws from the US?

What sort of things are there to do in the town closest to you?

The laws here are fairly similar to those in the U.S. (Maybe I should be concerned that the first thing you are asking about is the law, Confused but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for now.) Superficially, Canadian and U.S. societies are similar. If you are not breaking the law now, you could likely carry on your lifestyle here without being a criminal. As for immigration law, and how to get into Canada, you would have to research that to find out what requirements you need to meet.
As for things to keep yourself amused and occupied: Toronto has major league hockey, baseball, football (CFL, with the occasional NFL game), and soccer teams, and an annual Indy Car race for spectating, as well as various minor and amateur leagues for participating.
The shopping is as good as anyone needs, with major chains and independent retailers in all areas. Outdoors stores include Mountain Equipment Co-op, Europe Bound, Trail Head, Canadian Tire, and - just north of the city - Bass Pro Shops.
For music, there are countless clubs for all tastes, major concert venues which attract all your favourite touring musicians, plus large summer music festivals such as the Beaches Jazz Festival, The Downtown Jazz Fest, Afrofest, The Irie Festial, Caribbana, NXNE, Virgin Fest, well you get the idea.
There are also big annual events such as the Canadian National Exhibition (with its big air show), Busker Fest, Nuit Blanche, Pride Parade, Santa Claus Parade, and a bunch of others. The problem is never finding something to do; it's choosing which to take in from an almost endless list.
Claiming to be the most ethnically diverse city in the world, Toronto has every type of restaurant you can think of. There are lots of ravines and parks where you can find pockets of wilderness. Drive north for 2 or more hours and you start finding real wilderness areas.
In short, there is everything under the sun to do here. That's what I like about it. I hope that's of some use to you. Very Happy

Yes that's very helpful Bushrat. Maybe I phrased the first question badly. I think I meant to say, how's the government different. Cool

Well i would say that what you can do is only limited by what interests you Cool
If you love the outdoors ?..... need i say more Laughing pretty much you name it there is someone doing it.
Depending on where in Canada you live, there are tons of outdoor activitys to do.
And as Bushrat said, if your not breaking the law there, you should be Ok here in Canada, lol.
Its almost endless here in BC on things to do in the Outdoors.

Its alot colder in eastern Canada than it is in the west.
If you like long winters, than east may be your choice.
If you like milder winters & can deal with more rain than the westcoast would be the choice.

Cool

Hold everything. Before you start practicing saying "How about them Leafs, eh." maybe you had better check out this list that ranks all countries in terms of quality of life. If you don't mind herring for every meal and you find Scandinavian languages easy to master, maybe you can do better then Canada. Shocked
======================================================================================

The annual United Nations human development index compiled by the UN Development Program ranks 182 countries based on such criteria as life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

1. Norway
2. Australia
3. Iceland (likely to drop in next survey since 2007 data was analyzed prior to global economic crisis)
4. Canada (has one of the most open immigration policies around)
5. Ireland
6. Netherlands
7. Sweden
8. France
9. Switzerland
10. Japan (longest life expectancy at 82.7 years on average)
11. Luxembourg
12. Finland
13. United States
14. Austria
15. Spain
16. Denmark
17. Belgium
18. Italy
19. Liechtenstein (highest GDP per capita at $85,383)
20. New Zealand
21. United Kingdom

BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT

92. China (moves up seven places from last year, rise credited to improvements in education as well as income levels and life expectancy.)

THE BOTTOM THREE

180. Sierra Leone
181. Afghanistan (life expectancy of 43.6 years, only Asian country in the bottom 10)
182. Niger

=========================================================================

As for our government, we have a parliamentary system. Being a member of the British Commonwealth, our head of state is Queen Elizabeth. She is represented in Canada by the Governer General. This is basically symbolic. The country is actually governed by whichever party wins more seats than any other in a federal election. The party leader becomes Prime Minister. In each riding, whichever candidate gets more votes than his competitors gets a seat in Parliament, no matter what party s/he belongs to. The winning party's power comes from having more seats than the other parties.
The election process is more streamlined than in the U.S., but if the winning party still has less then half the seats, it is vulnerable to the other parties ability to force an election before the full term is up. It is one of two main parties, the Liberals and the Conservatives, who are inevitably in power. A few other parties often manage to get members into Parliament by winning in one or more ridings.
Then there are municipal elections for mayor and neighbourhood representatives at city hall, and provincial elections for provincial premier and regional representatives.
This is a simplified explanation. You can likely learn more by going to government of Canada and other websites.

if you hate universal health care, prepair to be dissapointed. I wouldnt say the weather is better, but it depends on what your preferance is and where you go, im not really a fan of the +40cm snowfalls in a day anymore lol. There is pretty much everything to do here as there is in the states in the bigger cities. except every town with over three people has atleast two ice rinks here. And the laws on 420 are alot less enforced. I dont know if that last one is a plus or minus to you, but its true.
