How Do Blisters Heal Fastest?

Q.} Once a heel blister starts to get better/heal, does keeping it exposed to air each night (so the area dries after the day of hiking) improve healing, or is keeping the area moist and soft with a dressing better?

A.} Wounds, on heels or anywhere else, do not like to dry out. I can’t quote hard science, but my educated guess is that wounds with a dry surface will take 3 to 4 times longer to completely heal than wounds that have been kept moist with a proper dressing.

And the chance of scarring is greater with dry wounds—if that matters to you. I strongly recommend keeping the area moist with a proper dressing, a dressing that holds in the body moisture of the blistered area.

normally when i get new boots or if my feet get wet and i get blisters I put some duct tape over the blisters... usually does the job.. at least it stops hurting for a while but if you take it off too fast you will tear the blister.. if that happens put more tape on to keep dirt out!

Thankfully, I've never gotten a blister on my feet. I have had a nasty one in the palm of my hand, though. I had to dig a hole to bury one of our dogs that died, and after pushing the shovel into the dirt 10,000 times, it had worn a huge blister in the palm of my hand. It didn't really hurt, it was just annoying for a few days. And my back was thrown out of whack for a week, too. Had to go to the chiropractor and get an adjustment before the pain would ever go away.

From personal experience and the experience of others, I think it takes longer for a wound to heal if you keep it under a wet dressing. You know how after you put a Band-Aid on a cut, and then later the skin is white? That's because it can't get any air. If you keep it bandaged for a day or two while it can recover enough to scab over, then it can heal on it's own. If there's a danger of getting grit into an oozing wound, then it definitely needs a dressing on it. But other than that, I say it needs to get air. Yes, it may scar, but hey, that's something to show off. Wink This guy said it was his EDUCATED GUESS. I have plenty of experience with wounds healing. Keep it clean, let it breathe. There's my two cents. Cool

With minor cuts, I'd say leave them open to the air, but I believe the current best practice with blisters is not to let them dry out.

Blister dressings such as Second Skin are really good for dealing with blisters on the feet. They eliminate the rubbing that caused the blister, get rid of the discomfort, and promote fast healing. The best thing, though, is to duct tape hot spots before they form into blisters.

I've never been able to use duct tape on my feet. I sweat a lot and the adhesive is not waterproof.

Instead I use electrical tape, which has a lower profile than duct tape, conforms to your foot, and seems to be moderately waterproof. Usually I throw some over a piece of moleskin, which sticks about as well as duct tape.

I have as well used duct tape, it works for me & ive also found that medical tape works good.
Though it can be pretty sticky, it holds well.

Purple Cloud Ointment, its a Chinese herbal remedy commonly used by glass blowers and people who get burn blisters all the time. It works wonders, my brother got some from his college (he is learning acupuncture and various other oriental medical ways ) and it worked great on all the blisters I have had so far... just watch out, it stains clothes kinda easy. There is a clip on youtube on how to make it.

Personally, I don't get them anymore... I blame the teenage fad of wearing your shoes loose, and having no show, or not wearing socks at all. I have some pretty nice callouses there now even when I do get them, I don't even feel them.
