Today was very hot and humid. Yesterday evening we had a major thunderstorm. Lots and lots of rain, and lots of lightning. Do you know how difficult it is to photograph lightning? I must have taken hundreds of exposures to get these. I could have had much better shots if the timing had been better. But this shows what I was looking at for about 3 or 4 hours last night.

I took those through the aptly named storm door of the house. Although it is possible to get hit there, it is very unlikely. One of the problems of photographing the lightning was that it was often directly overhead, where I couldn't see the actual forks of lightening. (One particularly close strike rattled the windows and set off a car alarm across the street. )
The local paper published a lightening photo taken by one of their photographers while standing on a highway overpass; no doubt he had a metal tripod set up, too. Now that's just plain stupid. As the storm swept over the city, the lightning was almost constant for a few hours.

oh it is just breathtaking
it reminds me of when I was in arazona and there was a wicked lightning storm. my mom and dad and I went to the Mountains to watch. got caught by a cop he thought we were up to no good, but we told him we were watching the lightning then he left and told us a good place to watch great stuff to see.

Today was clear and hot.
Yesterday was much the same, except for some isolated clouds drifting through. In my neighbourhood, we just got a couple of light showers that were easy to miss if you weren't near a window. It was a different story in Brampton, just outside of Toronto. They had some torrential downpours. After one seemed to have passed and the sky cleared, a 26 year old woman, her 5 year old son, and his 3 year old friend were struck by lightning in a park. All are still in hospital, the 2 boys in the most serious condition. Experts think that the wet ground and grass was a factor. After all the clouds had passed, lightning formed at a high level. It struck a chain link fence, travelled easily through the soaked ground, and came up where the people were standing.
I have never seen so much lightning as I have last summer and this. The weather is more volatile than it has ever been, beautiful one minute and a wicked storm literally a couple of minutes later. Be careful out there. Not just in the bush, but anywhere outside. Don't just check the forecast and the weather map. Be aware of what is going on in the sky. Pay attention when the wind picks up or gets cooler. Not even the best forecasters predicted yesterday's storm.

It's too hot and humid. It's at least 30 out there now, not including the humidex.
