Bye,Bye Mag Stick |
|
Well its official !
I am no longer useing a Mag stick for fire lighting.
I worked a big 25 cent piece size pile of shavings & it just smolders with a glow
Why i dont know ? but to me thats no good. So i took off the ferro rod and made a small handle.
The piece i used is called a " Tagua Nut " i think its from brazil ?
Its pretty cool, comfortable & easy to hold on too.
So now for fire lighting it's my Ferro rods & fatwood & jute in my tinder pouch.

That looks pretty good Dave .
I've never had much luck with a Mag stick.
The shavings seem to flash too fast & burn up too quick.
Maybe I was doing something wrong, but it took too much effort to get the tinder lit with Mag shavings .
I'll stick with PJ cotton balls or fatwood.

I usually break the ferro rods from the mag bars in half and mount each half is a seperate handle. The mag bars are only $6 and the ferro rods alone sell for $10.
anybody need a mag bar with no striker, I have several.

Gotta say my personal fav is my "torch" lighter.. thing burns real hot, adjusts pressure for altitude, is refilable with butain, and is windproof (nice blue flame)
aside from that.. def the firesteel... mag sticks are way too annoying in any type of wind.

Yes, the Mag sticks are falling off the " Cool got to have it list "
Ferro rod & good tinder is all you need for a fire starting kit.
Ive seen some of the torch lighters & there not cheap.
The ones i was liking were $ 89.99 ...

Well thats cool, mag sticks are pretty tough to use. I like them personally but I really want to get a certain type of ferro rod. I forgot what its called but it was posted on this forum at one point. The metal burns longer.

Mine was 8 dollers at the grocery store. It is not water proof, though.

Yeah, not a huge fan of mag sticks either, I've used them alot mind you, but I prefer a ferro rod.
Nice work dave!
You know, you can get some different sizes for those. Ill find the site, but they sell every thing from 1/8 to half inch ferro rods, all from 4" lone to 12" its quite the site.
