Parkour |
|
Hey all. I noticed some of you liked to work out the body and figured id suggest an activity if you will...
It is called parkour. It is a philosophy mainly based on the most efficient and fluid path of travel. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment—from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls—and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas.
Parkour is very demanding physically AND mentally. There are many many challenges in this Sport/Philosophy. For example, balance, control, judgment, and mental capabilities of the required obstacle.
Its mostly done by the younger generation, but in reality everyone can do it with enough practice.
If you want to see movies of people doing parkour, just google David Belle (Best of the best IMO). Or go to youtube and you will find hundreds of videos done by hundreds of different people. All in different areas of skill.
It is VERY good at training all those little tiny muscles that dont exist normally

Like you say, it's done mostly by the younger generation, and I'm happy to leave it to them. But it's incredible to watch someone skilled doing it. There's a show on Discovery Channel - the name of which escapes me at the moment - that films events with a special camera so that they can be seen in extreme slow motion. They recently showed a parkour ace clearing barriers, etc., and looked at what muscles were used and how various parts of his body absorbed impact, etc.

parkour is awesome, I would need a lot of practice before I was willing to do a lot of what they do, but it is still amazing to watch what the human body can do.
And that show wouldn't be called 'Time Warp' now would it?

Hah, yah I know what you guys mean... I saw that episode of Discovery Channel as well
I find it very interesting. Older (not old ) people could probably do vaults and other simple moves without much chance of getting hurt. (Just really sore )
I use it every so often as a good core workout, or arms, depending on what obstacles I choose to overcome.

Yes it would.
I saw that episode, and it was pretty cool. I just didn't know parkour was the name of it.
Now I am enlightened.

Lol, just to warn anyone wanting to take interest in it...
If and when you do start, be careful and dont do things you know could have a bad outcome.
My worst injuries from this are a few bloodied shins (Showing off, and training alone seem to get it to happen)

Ahhh a fellow traceur. Now this is a thread that I know something about.
First off... lets start with Time Warp... They mislabeled their episode. The stuff you saw on time warp was actually a split off of parkour called free running. Free running and parkour are two VERY different activities. Free running is about stunts, flips, tricks, that kind of thing. Parkour is about getting from point A to point B in the most direct route possible... this means climbing over walls, jumping over gaps, etc.
Me? I do parkour. I don't feel like landing on my head, and have no interest in showing off, I don't see the point. Parkour just is more objective based in my opinion, which I like, that and roof gaps have always been one of my favorite things to jump over
If you want to get involved in this community of people with a few screws loose...

This stuff is intence. Can't say i've ever done it but I would love to have the time to train specificly for it... Some people are crazy at it.
