How to build an igloo |
|
I already mentioned this in the "Movie Reviews" thread, but I thought it deserved to be in the "Shelters" thread, too. It's an old film that can be viewed on the National Film Board's website. It's a detailed look at how the Innuit (They were called Eskimos back then) build igloos. While 2 masters of the craft demonstrate, the narrator explains each step.

If you decide to give it a try, post the results here.

Igloos are often the most romanticized and dreamed about shelters. But the reality is that without absolute perfect conditions, building a proper igloo is near impossible. Especially without the experience that Eskimos have.
You're welcome to go out to try it and prove me wrong, though.

Better not waste any time, Drummer. With global warming there is no telling what condition the snow will be in.
If anyone comes across another good igloo tutorial, feel free to post it here, too.

The igloo I made with a buddy of mine a few years back... took a few hours and for the roof we put some trees across the top, spruce/pine bow's on top of that, and then snow. You can see them from the pic from the inside.

Didn't spend the night, but it was very very warm inside. When building it we put a large ball of snow inside to roll in place of a door from the inside. There was enough room for my friend (6'4") and myself (6'0") to lay down and have tons of room. We had a blizard and I was worried about the roof either cutting through the walls and falling apart or the whole thing coming down. The igloo lasted that storm, the next one, and stay'd standing untill spring. Was a great one, really wish we spent some time in it.
