Everyone needs to watch the Penn and Teller BS episode on the environmental hysteria as they state there is more tree's now than there has been in the last couple decades. I love the forest as much as anyone else by the guy says it all when in the video he says "I don't care is this is private land, or not private land". He doesn't have ANY right to tell someone else what they can do on their land as long as he is not physically being harmed (example, dumping nucleaur waste on the property that pollutes his well).
Also what they are doing isn't sustainable because they are only catering to the rich people who can afford to pay more than what the land is really worth. Since there is only so many people who are wishing to buy that way, and can afford to buy that way the amount of people doing what they are doing will always be a limited and small number.
Think about it, would the lumber industry want to cut down all the tree's this year so next year they don't have any jobs? No, they want to have a job today was well as tomorrow. The only reason the logging/lumber industry is going down is because very few houses are being built right now do to the depressed economy and it has nothing to do with the lumber industry running out of tree's.
I have a lot more problem with the fact that 50% of our energy comes from coal and fossil fuels than I do with someone chopping down large section's of forest as long as they put thing in place for the forest to be able to re-grow. But of course the easiest way to do that would be to open new nuclear power plant's (which would be based off new tech not the old tech from the 60's that all the plants now run) but due to all the issues with people complaining about not having a nuke plant in "their backyard" when it's not "their property" and they have no right to tell people what to do when it's not their property. These environmentalist are the same reason we can't have any more Hydro electric plants because it will damage property and land. As long as their not doing what China is doing and displacing people with force of government someone should be able to build a new Hydro plant, or Nuke plant.
It's the same thing people at FEMA does they say "we just want animals to be treated humanely" but once they get that they also want animals to not be eaten, then they want animals to not be owned as pets. If I eat meat it's my choice, not yours.
It's the same thing the anti-gun people want in to just restrict guns like this, then make mandatory registration and then like in the UK in a few decades you can't have a "pointed knife" not even a kitchen knife. If I want to protect myself with a gun it's my choice not yours, you can depend on the cops I will not.
What is with all the safety and environmental hysteria? If people are so worried about this stuff build a nice big bubble around yourself so what you never have a chance of anything happening to you but don't stop things that benefit myself and mankind because your afraid of X, Y and Z.
Put it this way during one of the environmental meetings at a school they has a lady go around talking about H20 (water) and using the technical terms for it and she got hundreds of people to sign up to "ban water" because most of these people don't go off anything other than emotion. People need to learn to use logic and not emotion to dictate there actions.
I do support their right to buy the land and use it as they see fit, but they are silly to think all lumber can be made/got this way it's just not possible.
And again I love the forest and the environment as much as anyone on this board, but sometimes people with the environmental and safety hysteria get me POed because they want to run other people's life and they are willing to use the force of government to do it.

I love it when people talk about saving the rain forest b recycling paper.
Paper is not made from old growth wood of any kind. Down south here growing pulp wood is an agricultural industry. Large stands of fast growing pulpwood are cultivated and harvested just like cotton, corn or sow beans.
Same with engineered wood for construction. Georgia pacific owns thousands of acres that are rotated in harvest annually just like any long term crop. One row harvested this year and replanted, the next row harvested and replanted next year. that is the source of nmost of your OSB and plywood.
I hear that most of the stuff you guys see being cut on the west coast is being shipped to japan and china!

everyone here has excellent points and thanks for making me think.
i have know probs with tree farms and replanting after cutting just leave the old growth alone. and guns I agree everyone has the right to bare arms. I for now chose not to. but I like my right to get one. I have no right to tell anyone they can't protect themselfs or eat by hunting just because of my fear. my dad was a cop but I wont rely on them. to protect me if a burglar came in or what ever. alright I am off on a tangent sorry. I love trees but I think tree farm and replanting are great. but I do recycle.

There is a few company's that specialize in old wood. They recycle old barns/houses and take wood that has been soaking in rivers for years (they use to just cut down all the trees and send them down river, sometimes they would get water logged and sink) and turn it into special wood because of the grains and colors and sell it to people at a premium. Interesting stuff and it's recycled.
