Season 3 Episode 1 Sierra Nevadas Talk *SPOILERS!* |
|
Let the discussion begin...
I thought it was pretty good. Didn't really like the whole "lightweight, high-tech backpacker" thing. Obviously not his style, but he was making a tv show about getting lost in this kind of situation. I understand.
Was pretty interesting how he started a fire. Shorting out the LED headlamp wasn't exactly safe(it could have just as easily exploded, and he would have a forest fire on his hands), but it worked.
It was a sad thing to see when his paiute deadfall was sprung, but didn't fall. He didn't get the stick away from the rock some, and the rock just fell and landed on the upright stick. What a shame.
Was kind of sad to see his guitar go, too. I wonder if it was salvagable after being buried and used as a trap. Probably so since that was after the rain.
All in all, a good episode. I will expect better for the rest of the season, though.

I thought it was good. The guitar trap was very creative. I too thought the tent was a change for him but i did go with the scenario. A good opener to the new season and I definitely look forward to the next episode.

Watched it with friends last night. I thought it was pretty good.
My friend flipped when he took apart the guitar "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO A GOOD GUITAR" he asked lol.

Knowing Les I'm sure He has plenty of guitars and probably brought along a cheap one to use....lol
I like the episode too it was different seeing Him in a tent instead of some kind of hand made or nature made shelter.
Look forward to seeing the other episodes this season.

Loved it and the tent. I liked his traps and the guitar trap too, yeah my bf didn't like that part, but my favorite was when the SAR came into the show I learned alot about it. go to your Zen state. I liked when he played his guitar too. all in all a very good show. can hardly wait till next episode.

Was pretty good, i'm going to take a differnt type of path commenting.
You can really see the evolution of the show in this episodes. Compared to season 1 episode 1 its almost a totally differnt show. More proffesional and high tech. I guess it was the amature point of view I always liked better but the show was really good.
I was a little disapointed that he didnt make any shelters (being a shelter maker myself). The fire was a realy cool idea. I had no idea you could start a fire with such low voltage/amperage
Although I like when he finds his own way out, the search and rescure was a cool idea, something new.
The deadfall dropping on his fingers was funny "i've been there before" haha. The guitar idea was great, I really thought he would have cought something.
The high tech thing isnt my favorite type of survival but you have to cover everything. it was pretty intresting, just VERY differnt from season 1 and even 2.
Here are some things I noticed about the show:
1- More proffesional, the plan he uses is set in stone. Unlike some other episodes where he risks leaving in various dirrections
2- Lot more people invloved with the show, the search and rescue
3- More high tech, no traditonal bushcraft skills in this one, but thats understandable going with the scenario he went with
4)No more crazy camera shots. He used to always do camera shots that took hours but looked great. Too bad he abandoned that idea
All in all I liked it. Change is good, and i learned quite a few new things. I like the scenario and use of the search and rescue. Though I prefer the amature risky type
scenarios, plans and escape routes, it was really good!
Great job.

Hehe....sorry bub, but you'll have to wait.
That's why I put *SPOILERS!* in the topic line. It won't air in Canada for a little while. How long, who knows.
But we just spoiled it for you.
Quite a lengthy review, Troop. But a very good one, at that.

Okay...I take that as an *open* invitation.
I saw a brief advertisement on Liveleak or Youtube wherein Les does an advert for SPOT, which is a satellite location and rescue service.
From my own investigations, it requires an annual subscription for the service, but IMO the rates are -very- reasonable if you spend a lot of time outdoors. But here is the kicker:
In the commercial, Les says he now "doesn't go anywhere without it."
Hardly aboriginal. Now I myself am a techie and think it is a good idea. Otoh, I understand there are those here who are luddites and would find something like this to be a cardinal sin. Whichever way you look at it, Les is _now_ using satellite telemetry according to his infomerical, in order to keep family, friends, apprised of his location and condition. There is also a 911 feature on SPOT that allows for summoning rescue.
It should be noted that most SAR rescues cost at least $10,000 because there is usually a helicopter and police involved, and the time run up on these resources can get quite steep. Nevertheless, if you're lying at the bottom of a gulley with a compound fractured leg, I
am pretty sure I would hit the 911 button myself.
Go HERE to see a preview of Les hawking the satellite system: http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=1610
A tent? Why not. Everybody I know of has at least one. Keeps the creepy crawlies out of your sleeping bags at the least.

> Well i must say i liked it, it was differant from all other's he has done.
As Troop mentioned, alot more Techy. I liked the guitar salad
And if anyone noticed, Les had a new fixed blade he was useing.... not sure what brand it was, couldn't get a clear look.
But it was not the Buck 119.
The change towards more of the tent gear and stuff is something he has never done so it was a good change.
I mean alot of people go camping like this, so it all makes sence.
I hope the others are more the lost guy with not much gear though, i like the shelter building and stuff.
In all its good

I thought it was a great episode, I don't mind the tech. I know some people that have told me it is to much tech, but they wouldn't be happy until they kick him out of a airplane buck naked. And then expect him to build a cabin and eat steak.

It wasn't that high tech if you think of it. It was very minimum equipment for backpacking. Anyway when he went hiking up the mountain he didn't bring the tent with him, he left most of his stuff behind except one camera and his fire bundle. I like it because it's something new, you can't watch the same scenario over and over and call it pioneering. I think this season will have many different things in it. Next episode is supposed to have him surviving with two horses. Very different indeed. I like that he did have the SAR there, because he hasn't used signals before very much. If you felt like there wasn't much going on, well it's a survival situation. You're supposed to laze around.

There is one thing that bothers me though I forgot ot mention. Unlike season 1 where he would mention every single item he has, he dosent do that anymore. He just keeps taking items out nowhere. No biggie but I would like to see him introduce everything.

Yeah, I completely agree with that, because otherwise how do we know he doesn't have a bunch of other stuff with him as well? I believe on faith that he doesn't though mind you

Yeah, I saw that fixed blade, too. All he did was cut a piece of paracord with it, so I didn't get a great look at it.
And I get what you guys said about him not telling what all he has with him. I don't really like it, but it's okay.
