I also use a GI poncho. It's my bivy/ ground cloth. I like the tarp shelter because it's a lot lighter and simpler than a tent.

When I go camping in about a week I think I'll try making a scout pit. That'll be fun because I like to dig holes. It's a dirt camping pad so I don't think they'll mind so long as I fill it in when I'm done. Don't worry I'll take lots of pics when I go. Cool

I wouldn't put the oil lantern inside, don't they give off fumes???

I got a US Pup tent half yesterday from a friend of mine, can't wait to set it up.

That shelter is far from airtight, so I'm sure a oil lantern wouldn't be of any concern.

Here is my first A-frame shelter. Very Happy

Here is the front(you can see my start of a firewood pile, as well).

And the side views:

Inside...

And the back:

It took about two hours start to finish. It really needed more leaves(as they were settling), but there weren't anymore in the immediate area and I was tired of raking. And if I had had more wood, I would have put another layer on to keep the leaves from blowing away and help shed the rain better. But hey, that's something for day two. Wink

The only mistake I made(but the killer one) was in direction of placement. While I was building it, I kept a steady pace that kept me warm without sweating. But after finishing and crawling inside, I discovered there was a breeze coming up the hollow blowing directly into it. Whoops!!! Lesson learned there! I had the head end on the downhill side(pointing into the hollow). Note to self: always point shelter towards the top of the hill, not the bottom. Like Cliff said in another thread: The time to have your failures is during practice...not in an emergency. If I had had to depend on this to get me through a cold, windy night, I would have been miserable. Now I know to pay attention to placement better. Mistakes. It's how we learn.

Another note about these things: make the ridgepole about twice as long as you think it needs to be. I thought I would have about 4 feet exta, but in reality, it was just barely enough. I'm glad I overcompensated!

Thanks, Dave and Kim. Cool

Now I know that I can build one of these in an emergency, if necessary. Smile

And Kim, read the section of Les's book on shelters. It really helped me a lot. Have fun! Very Happy

P.S. Since you live in Washington, you could use spruce or hemlock boughs instead of leaves like I had to. The spruce around here grows in very select places. It's only in deep canyons and pristine forests. I was on a ridge that was clearcut many years ago, so there wasn't much there in the way of materials. But I made do.
