Birch Bark container |
|
here are pics of my container that i made today in the back yard. i got the bark yesterday when we went quading. the bark came from a dead rotting birch tree.
i just made a few cuts in the bark so that it folds and then i used two sticks that i split a little down the middle to hold it all together.
i have another piece of bark that im going to use to make another one and i will try and video it or at least take step by step pics

looks good. I could never do that. Well because any peice of birch bark that touches my hands gets burt. I remember I was going to take some bark home for our fire, but that never happened, it all got burnt.

it would leak but if i used some pitch and kinda glued the flaps and around the bottom with it you could prob drink with it.
i have another pieace outside soaking in some water right now to make it a little more easy to work with, well thats the idea anyway lol. but with this piece im going to spend a bit more time on and make it water tight and a bit nicer looking as well.
the one that you just saw in the picks took me like 5 min to make and its just for berrys and what not.

Be sure to soak it in hot water, because birch bark has a lot of resins in it making it very water resistant.

Good job Bill. You can always use something like that for collecting berrys, mushrooms.

Then i suggest sticking to just collecting berries,
I seen Ray Mears make a nice little drinking cup from birchbark, i must try.

Good improvisation, NH.
I wish there were birch trees around here.
