road bikes have really skinny tires that have no treads. About 3/4" to 1", and the air pressure is around 100psi. rides way easier on roads, but slips on gravel easy, or dirt. Cool

If your thinking of gettinga road bike ? then you will be riding just the road S-kid.
They totaly suck in any other situation. There made for flat, hard, suface riding, thats all ! Confused

They make " Hybird " bikes now that can deal with some light trail riding.
They have way better control and are able to deal with ruff rides.
They also make whats called a " Cyclcross " bike, which is like a road bike, but able to deal with off-road conditions.
They are double the price of a Hybird bike, and thats just an entry level version.

For what its worth, just pump your tire pressure up to 60psi and go with it.
I keep my tires on my Mountain Bike at 55 to 60 psi. Its easyer to pedal, faster.
But on sand or heavy dirt it doesn't handle as well. Thats the trade off.
So all my riding is what i call 60/40 . I ride 60 % on road/side walks/ hard packed trails & 40 % is dirt.
So i favour a harder tire pressure. And if you can get a tire with a center bead instead of a full on mud/dirt tire.
There are alot of selection for bike tires these days, so you are not limited any more like i remember.

It was, Dirt or Road ! thats it , Shocked LOL. Now there are tons of great all around tires. Cool

I think I'll just stick with my mountain bike, I barely ever ride roads that arn't gravel/dirt.

Something to help you get in that last 5 miles Cool

Baking Soda May Beat Muscle Burn
The answer to short-term muscle fatigue may not be any farther away than your kitchen pantry.

The next legal performance booster might already be stocked in your kitchen and baked into your morning toast. A study from British researchers at Loughborough University shows that sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, may improve anaerobic performances. The mechanism, the study reported, could be in baking soda's ability to reduce the acidity of blood pH and thereby cut muscle burn from lactic acid produced by anaerobic activity.

The use of baking soda for sports performance has been studied for years with mixed results, but the researchers took issue with the fact that previous studies tested repeated performances, not single-bout efforts that replicate most competitive efforts.

In this case, nine male elite swimmers were used and their performance and blood pH was measured for three 200-meter freestyle time trials spread out over three weeks. The results showed a consistent 1.5 seconds advantage to swimmers who ingested baking soda. While this edge may seem small, the difference between the silver medal and fifth place at this Olympics' 200-meter men's freestyle was only 1.1 seconds. Blood tests from before ingestion, before the trial, and also showed an increase in pH (less acidity), compared to placebo and control groups.

For cyclists, this adds further proof to the idea that baking soda can delay fatigue. The most recent cycling study, published in 2004, concluded that baking soda reduced fatigue and followed the same dosage of 300mg per kg of body weight taken one hour before testing. To put that in easier terms, a 150-pound cyclist would need to take 20 grams before a workout or race.

While baking soda appears to boost performance, the catch is that it's only proven for sprinting, not all-day efforts. The best bet for riders curious to test this possible leg-saver is to try hard and short exertions like sprint training. Even if you don't feel any increased speed, you'll at least get a killer workout in.

^ how much do you use, and do you eat it?

I got back from my ride. It was actually 24 miles. There were a few hills in the first half, but it was a good ride. It was challenging, but I still kept up. We did it in 2 hours which was pretty fast. On the second hill I sure knew where my heart was. Laughing I'm glad it was challenging because I need a good workout. Very Happy And you know what. I feel great right now. Razz

It would have to be something really really strong! It's really sour and salty, and tast reallly bad.

The perfect way to do it would be to get some empty medicine capsules.

Ok here's the best way to eat the baking soda. Place the whole spoonfull on your tonge, then quickly swallow it with a glass of water. For best results use mouthwash after. Wink Worst way is to disolve it in water. YUCK!

> Oh ya, this is really going to stir the hornets nest, lol. Next years race is going to be Awesome.

If you followed any of Lances life you will know that he has been bugged a million times about doping.
So, next year from what i understand, he will be posting all his testing through out the race so everyone will see the results.
And lay to rest the BS about him doping. He is the most tested rider Ever ! in history, & he's always clean.
So next years race is going to be freakin intence Cool

Cheers Lara Very Happy
