One thing that disgusts me is garbage. The fact that we even have it. I was pondering the idea, and concluded that garbage only exists in our modern world. In order to package things to be transported to another area there needs to be a container which usually ends up being garbage. In the hunter-gatherer style of living there would be no garbage, and if there were waste products they could all be recycled into the environment. For example food garbage would decompose into the environment once more, and animal guts can be used as bait to catch more animals. Today garbage sits in a big pit we call the landfill doing nothing. Landfills aren't meant to decompose garbage it's simply a means to put it somewhere. Garbage actually decomposes much much slower in landfills. You can still read newspaper from 50 years ago in a landfill, even ones that got wet. Shocked

Obviously we can't eliminate garbage in our normal lives but we can surely reduce it. Growing things in your garden to eat, and finding natural foods to eat helps. Recycle what is recyclable, and reuse any garbage that can still be used in other ways. Cool

Also, composting is a GREAT way to reduce the amount that goes into a landfill. You can almost reduce your garbage by half by doing this alone, even by not gardening.

Another thing I do is not grocery shop in the inside isles of the store, where all the packaged/premade 'just add whatever' food is. Not only is that food unhealthy for you with all the additives and other crap, most come in a ridiculous amount of packaging.

Oh, we also use canvas bags when we grocery shop, plastic grocery bags should be banned if you ask me.

What really bothers me about garbage is what most the younger generation do with it. I can honestly admit (and I am sad to say) most my friends i've seen liter at least once. People just dont care and they would rather throw something out he car window rather than throw it into garabage can. It's no wonder school zones in my area are so literd. It's disgusting. I really wish people who have some sort of respect for the enviromen tand just keep it reletivly clean

Cigarette butts are the worst too...they are EVERYWHERE it seems. I really hate that, one guy I saw dumping his car ashtray out on the street, when he was a red light. I was sooooo angry.

You are exactly right. Nothing burns me worse than people who litter. Evil or Very Mad

That's what trash cans and recycling bins are for. To them the whole world is their garbage can. Rolling Eyes

About the only thing recycled here is metal(for the money). There used to be a place to recycle newspaper, but they don't do it anymore. Confused

I would recycle most of our waste(cardboard, plastic, glass) if there was a place to take it. Sad

Yeah I find it hard to litter because I'm afraid I'll get in trouble. If you want litter you should look at our school grounds and parking lot. I see people all the time that are 5' from a garbage can and they chuck it on the ground.

My point in this tread was also to see if anyone has thought about why we have garbage like I have. And if anyone thought that there wouldn't be garbage in a primitive style life. Question

There wouldn't be garbage like we have now, with no glass or plastic. Or if you mean we're all suddenly shoved into a situation like The Stand, well, I'm sure we'd still use stuff like that but no new glass/plastic would be being produced.

Though did anyone watch that show on Discovery recently, or History or one of those channels, about how the Earth would be if suddenly all humans were gone? It was very interesting, but the impact we've made would still last thousands and thousands of years, from our buildings to highways to nuclear plants.

I found that show fascinating. Especially how the nuclear plants would make a big mess of things if people stopped operating the cooling systems, etc.

As for garbage, my city doesn't have to worry about it; we ship it to a landfill in Michigan. Okay, so actually we do have to be concerned about it. The border is going to be closed in another year or two, so we have to come up with some other way of dealing with it. It's becoming a major issue, as it should be.

Did you ever think that the hippies had a lot of things right. Wink They wanted to live in communes, and grow all their food. They would be self sufficient, and everything would be organic. They wouldn't have garbage, and if they did it would be so minute it wouldn't have much of an impact. I know hippies may have a bad rap, but they had a lot of good ideas. Smile

saw that show Steph great one. I think the hippies did have it right. I don't think there would be garbage in a primitive life style.because mainly what steph said and because we would grow our own food and hunt. I think the primitive life style almost everything is biodegradable. Very Happy

I really hate myself for all the garbage me and my family make, it really makes you feel bad that you waste so much, I am going to try to start a compost pile but that still doesn't take care of everything. We burn our paper trash, is that good or bad, most of that stuff I don't think can be recycled.

I hope you people don't feel bad for being born, because even though we have made a lot of messes we still have the ability to clean it up. Whether you believe in creation or evolution, we are still apart of this world and we still have a responsibility to take care of it.

I would like to see more landfills treated like mines for recycling paper or metal, or maybe be willing to subsidize recycling companies to reduce landfills to the point where garbage that goes into them is only there for a short period of time.

Something that I don't understand here in Michigan is that they have an opportunity to put more plastic containers under the 10 cent refund but so far it isn't happening.

As least with burning paper, I think you can use to ashes for the garden (I think its potassium) or for getting unstuck in the winter time.

Does anyone have any idea on how to deal with this? I have trees growing between our two yards but the smoke seems to go up and over them. Now that it is getting on towards summer, it is getting hot with the windows closed.

The rules seem to be pretty weak here on burn barrels. People seem to still think of it as a right. Do you know how I can get my cedars to grow faster? Is there a green way of filtering air from the outside?
