My 14 year old daughter,Julie, got a sudden urge to try her hand at fire starting after seeing one of the "LittleBear vs Wild" episodes.
I took her out back, equipped her with some kindling & PJ cotton balls & a firesteel.
Getting the feel of it:
Almost there:
Now she has it:
Next up for her...Knife skills.
We both had a good time & now she actually wants to go camping sometime.

Cool. I must admit it's always nice to have a parent help you with things like that because they're more likely to do them later on in life. Passin down the lagacy.

Are you sure she's been getting enough Survivorman in her diet? Too much ManvsWild is bad for them at that age.
Good job, Cliff. Getting young people into the outdoors is always a good thing.
What is going to be her first knife?

I have a Bark River Mini Canadian that will be hers.
Julie has always been kind of a cell phone / I Pod kind of girl so I was a little surprised at her interest in this stuff.
Nothing wrong with cell phones or I Pods , but there's more out there to do than those.
Now I just need to work on a couple of her friends & they'll all be hooked

Micarta is made from linen and resin. It doesn't really look like wood to me.

That Miini C. handle is Green canvas micarta. Looks more like a shade of brown to me,but I have 9 Barkies at the moment with 4 of them being the Green canvas micarta & all 4 of them look brown.
I like it as a starter blade because of the finger grooves on the handle & blade. It's really a secure handle shape. She'll need all of her fingers to be intact for her text messaging.
2.5" blade...A2 steel...secure sheath...easy to maintain.
Should be a nice one to start her off with.
Oh and yes , she does watch Survivorman too. That other guy could get somebody hurt

Ah ! settled then Micarta it is, . I like the look of it. I usually see the black handled ones, looks nothing like that. Good to see your daughter is a Survivorman watcher.
