The most annoying thing about being outside in the woods in the bugs (expeically here in canada) anyways, does anyone know ways to repell insects?

There are a number things out there that at least help

- Insect repellant
- Insect nets
- White clothing

Anything else?

i was told by this old native guy once that if you take the fungus off of an old willow tree i think they are called conks but if you take those and burn them it keeps away the bugs

Well mud is cool and all but I dont plan to smear myself with it when i go recreational camping. I know smoke does work to some degree too.

^Those are scent-free so that hunters can use them. Smile

I've never used one, and I don't know of any toxicidity, but I would probably need one if I was in Canada in the summer. Shocked

Bugs don't like fabric softener sheets(aka dryer sheets) made by Bounce. Very Happy

You can use them when you dry your clothes, or you can just keep one near you(under your hat would be a good place). Cool

Keeps 'em at bay, I've been told. Surprised

here's how it works.

it says it's derived from a certain type of mum, so it's all natural. Smile

Some people swear by vitamin B. Start taking it months before you plan on being in the woods.
Don't wear dark clothes, or floral patterns.

I have a technique for dealing with a pesky deer fly: They seem kind of cunning for a fly; they fly around behind your head, looking for a place to bite you on the back of the neck. Mad When they do that, wave your hands around behind your head. This drives them out in front of you. When you can see the fly, give it a good whack with your hand. Surprised This will stun it briefly so it drops to the ground. Very Happy If you are fast, you can stomp on it before it recovers. They're tough, so make sure you get it good. Twisted Evil Stomp on it a few times. Twisted Evil Keep stomping Twisted Evil and stomping Twisted Evil and stomping Twisted Evil until it's just a stain on the ground. Twisted Evil Shocked Very Happy
Um, Embarassed that's how I deal with pesky deer flies.

I always found at work (on slow days on the beach..) that if you killed a fly more would come... this was when dealing with horse fly's.. anyway, eventually we saw that the live ones wer EATING the dead ones... so we stop'd killing them...

This won't help you in the battle against bugs in the bush, but here's a really cool trick you can do with a house fly. If you have a fly in your house, wait until he lands on a table or a similar surface. Carefully and slowly get closer until you are within arm's length from him. Bring your hands from the sides close to him, then when the moment is right: SMACK!! Twisted Evil

If you just swatted at him with your hand, he would get away, but because you bring your hands in from the sides and you smack so fast, he can't get away. Bye bye fly. Twisted Evil

Basically, he gets squished between your hands. Shocked

Like I said, not very useful, but a neat trick. Cool

Like catching a fly with chopsticks...only easier. Laughing

The citronella plant itself works somewhat better than the candles. Break up a leaf and rub it on your arms, etc.

There is another plant that you can use as well when you smash it all up & squeeze out the juice.
