True true mtwolfsbane, nice info
You can practice all you want at knapping NorthernHunter, but when I make a good arrow head or spear point, I sure don't want to shatter it, if I want more practice, I will just make another one

I have my outdoors liscence yeah, and spear hunting is still illegal, I just like it. I like spear fishing and I just like general spear crafting, they seem fun to make and are simple enough to be a beginner thing I think.
I want to eventually be able to craft a nice long bow but.. I think I'm a ways off

And here in New York spear hunting/fishing is illegal in most areas I am pretty sure. I know that fishing is, in fact unless you are in specific regions, you aren't allowed to be within 10 feet of the water with any spear-like objects

I'm not actually so sure, but I think spear fishing is illegal here too. A lot of people do it, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

Some areas allow it, but it is heavily regulated and I am pretty sure the only thing you are allowed to fish is Carp

Here in BC the only people aloud to hunt with spear's are Indians. They can fish, hunt with them.
But you can fish with bow & arrow here. No speacial license needed. All fishing reg's stand the same though.
What ever the quota is for that lake, river, steam doesn't change.

When Bow fishing as far as i know it can only really be done in slow moving rivers & creeks. Cause for one, you would never see a fish in water deeper than 4ft. Ive never done Bow fishing. Depends on the fish you are fishing, if it was salmon run, well, they are from 8lbs to 30lbs very easy to see in rivers. To me it would seem to be avery sellect type of fishing really, harder than useing a rod in my mind. I was looking in my new S.I.R. cataloge & they carry Cabela products, they have 3 Bow fishing Bows, they are set up just for that.

I'm not sure if this is of any help in building a spear, but here's a spear I brought back from Kenya:
It breaks down into 3 sections for easy carrying. The centre section is wood, and the front and rear sections are steel. It's 7'3" long, and the balance point is 43" from the front. The centre 1/3 is not tapered much; most of the tapering is in the front and rear thirds.
This is an authentic spear that I bought from the Njemps tribe. A lot of souvenir spears are made for tourists, and at first glance they resemble the real thing. If you want to tell a real spear from a souvenir. look at the blade. On a real spear, the blade has knife-like edges. On a spear built for tourists, the blade has squared off edges, like a hockey skate blade.

That's pretty cool. Cold steel makes those, called a Samburu spear.

Very cool, BushRat.
Time for some stalk hunting.
So, do you keep it mounted on your wall or something?

I've moved a lot, so right now it's stored in a plastic tube, but it has spent time mounted on walls. What I have in mind to do some day is build a small basement bar (to go with a home theatre I'm also considering) with an Africa theme. The spear would no doubt be mounted above the bar. It is hands down the favourite of all my souvenirs.

Actually I was thinking of the African theme for just the bar, which would be in the same room. The theatre end of the room would have either a movie theme, or a general theme (meaning all sorts of stuff that I've accumulated). If I ever build it, you're invited, Flash!

Flash. look what you've started. Yes. everyone is invited. It'll be like those midnight showings of "Rocky Horror Picture Show". We'll all be wearing Survivorman merchandise and saying the dialogue along with Les. Afterwards I'll head to a certain cabin in Alabama to rest up.
