 | | Yeah, I don't figure a night out on the open water would be very pleasant.
Good to hear you had a good trip. |
You know I'm actually curious to see if I could fold my seat down all the way, and lay down in it. Not that I'd actually sleep in it, just curious.

Just make sure you tie up the canoe first, Dave.
We could lose you forever.

Oops, guess I didn't see your post till now. My kayak was $800, and with paddle, life vest, skirt, and cartop carrier about $1200 total.
Thursday I went on an adventure, but it wasn't a kayak adventure. I went up north to the oconto river with my friend to go fishing. That's the boundary waters between Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. He had a 17' square back canoe with a 5HP engine on it. The fish weren't biting much, but I caught 4 bass. There were some cool things we saw too. There was a tiny rock island probably 50'x 20' that we fished off of for a while, and we saw this thing swimming in the water. It got closer and we saw it was a water moccasin (poisonous snake). That was cool, I've never seen one swimming before. We got to a different island and we started hearing something move around, next thing you know there's a mama deer crossing the river. A little while later we saw the fawn still on the island. On the way back up the river we stopped at this island that was a YMCA camp. I lost my good jointed lure up in a tree there. I was catching all my fish with that lure. We went down the trail a bit, and my friend started casting. I notices my feet start tingling so I looked down and there was red ants crawling on my feet. There was a log nearby that they lived in. After we got back up river we put the canoe away and went in this wilderness area by his cabin. It's cool because there's a nice campsite that you can just walk in. It's right on the river right above the huge rapids. We fished around there in the calm pools. Then I lost my spinner on a rock. When we went back we saw another fawn on the trail. It was pretty close. That's basically it for the adventure, but it was a lot of fun.

Went out on the bay again today, but I went the opposite dirrection from before. I paddled about 2-3 miles to the Au Sauble Nature area. It was a really nice area with a sandy coastline and no people. It had a lot of zebra muscles on the shore, because we have a problem with muscles here. I hung out there for a while maybe and hour or more. I found a smooth flat rock, and I'm going to try it for knife sharpening, of coarse not on my good knifes. I tried to start a handdrill fire, but I was stopped short. I look at my hand and there's a big chunk of skin ripped off. But I had my first aid kit and put a band aid on it so I didn't get it too dirty. The paddle started off really calm, and buggy, but the wind picked up later, made some waves and took care of the bugs. I liked the waves that was fun. There weren't many boaters out surprisingly, but there were some jet skiers. I'm just glad they saw me. I had my skirt on the whole time but my legs still got wet except it was from sweat not lake water. I think that'll be a great place to hang out some other time, or catch carp.

I tried out my sharpening stone today on my tru flight thrower. It's a cold steel knife about 6 or 7 inches medium carbon steel. Well if anything it didn't hurt it. It worked alright, but of coarse not as good as an actual sharpening stone because it's not perfectly flat and has very small divits out of it. It got it sharp and that's all that matters. Here I chopped a peice of trim I was holding in half.

If you practice more, you will develop calluses and it won't hurt anymore.
All the more reason to keep at it!!

I roughen my hands when I climb the tree too, and the inside of my thumbs when I kayak. Yep it's good for anything not to have dainty hands.

My Gross adventure |
|
So today I tried a new location. It's 3 lakes connected by a stream. First off I got lost on the way. There was a real queer intersection and it wasn't marked well so I went north instead of east. Luckily I noticed before I went too far. When I got there it was pretty nice, and easy to get in. There was one boat out there already. So I found the river. Well it didn't look so promising then because it was built up with cattails, lilly pads, and lots of weeds. So I figure I'm a kayak I can squeeze through. Well It was rough going, and I had dangly weeds hanging from my paddle on every stroke. There was plenty of bugs and duckweed to soil my boat many times over. Then I got stuck. I tried turning around but It wasn't going well and I was using all my effort. I then stuck a leg out to push myself. Oh and I didn't mention that it stunk like sulphur back there, or rotting eggs. Anyway that was dissapointing and I was back to my one lake not 3. So I just fished for a while. I caught a little panfish maybe 6". It's funny because the lure I caught him with was about half of his length. Then when I got home I gave my kayak a nice scrub, and since I was in the cleaning mood I washed all of my kayak gear.

I just threw him back he was tiny.
I can't get that nasty smell out of my head. I think if you wanted to torture me you could do it by smell. You'd just have to have me smell it once and I wouldn't forget it for a while.

Today I went out of the sailing club on the west side of the bay. It was only about a mile straight out to Little Tail penninsula. So I get there and I was happy because it was nice and sandy there. Then there were these nice little signs posted around the pennisula. "No Tresspassing" It was privately owned, but the only thing on it was a duck blind at the very end. That made me very mad. What's the point of having a big penninsula if all you're going to do is use it once a year for hunting. Just hoarding the land. There were about 8 owners posted on the sign too. I think that land should belong to the state to be a wildlife area so that anyone can walk around on it. The only people that would go out there would be people with kayaks or canoes bacause it's really shallow water. So I played in the waves a little and headed back. Then I remembered that there was a boat landing I went to before close by. So I went out and found my dyke that I went on before. I sat there on a rock for about 10 minutes. There was so much weeds and grass that you couldn't see the lake on the other side of the dyke. I saw lots of jewelweed too, and some thistle. Anyway it's a nice place to launch from because it doesn't get that busy because it's a private marina. They have a nice club house there for us too. You can rent it out for a night for $10 to have a party.
