Good work.
Now start using different tinders. Start with something easy like cotton or dryer lint, then move on to more natural stuff like cedar bark and dried grass. You'll be a fire expert in no time.
Everytime I start a fire, I learn something new. My mind goes, "Ahh...I see now." You'll be starting fires with wet tinder before too long.

Next time, put some petroleum jelly in it, then light the cotton.
Burns for a long time.
Almost like a candle.

i've never used jelly to further a burn.... I duno, cotton (or even just the bark) lights birch fairly easily even when wet. When birch is dry firesteel will light it fine and there are a lot of these trees around here... Maybe it's just me tho....

^You don't want all pj with a little cotton, you want cotton with a good bit of pj. If you put too much pj, it probably won't light. It won't burn by itself, it needs something to wick it. That wick is cotton. Works just like a candle.
The cotton lights from your spark, the jelly starts to melt and wick up through the cotton, and.....fire!!!
The petroleum will burn long after the cotton would have gone out.(at least 10 times longer)

I'm sure if you tossed a bunch of pj into a roaring fire it would probably burn, but it won't light off of a spark or even a match(lighters too, I've tried).
Good luck, linsleyk.

wax does burn tho... if you don't believe me light a candle and take a metal screw driver to it. Put a bit of the wet wax on the end of the screw driver then hold it in the flame. Very soon it will ignight. Gotta love grade 9 science classes!

Things like that will burn under the right circumstances(I've done the same thing with wax too, Daffy), but pj tends to just melt when you put a flame to it. That's what the cotton is for.
How did it go, linsleyk?
