non- freeze dried food. |
|
Hey guys, What kind of food would you reccomend to take backpacking overnight? Im looking for something that you dont have to keep cold, but not freeze-dried or have to add water. Something to cook over/in a fire besides the normal burgers and hot dogs.

Well if you like tuna there's tuna in a pouch. The only other things I can think of right now are canned foods (some nice spam ), or there's MRE's.

I learned from hunters when they go out for weeks at a time that they pre-cook there bacon.
One guy loves his bacon and he pre-cooks 5lbs ! of it.
After cooking make sure all the grease is removed. Then use good zip lock bags & store it in the fridge till you go. Its cooked so it wont go bad even if not in a fridge. Just put it in tin-foil chuck it on the coals for 3 or 5 minutes.

Yeah, I like this thread. I also have a hard time finding things to bring to eat.

Sounds tasty.
I would recommend MRE's.

Here's what I came up with for my menu. I have MRE's, ramen, rice and beans, flour for ashcakes, tuna, crackers, and poptarts. I filled an extra backpack for just my food. most of the bulk is from the MRE's, but they have tons of food. For really lightweight backpacking the beans, rice and ramen are exellent.

Yeah, those MRE's are pretty cool.
They have loads of calories....that's why the Military fuels their soldiers with them.
Enjoy.

I got the real ones from the surplus store. Everywhere else sells the watered down immitation ones. He said next year he might not even be able to get them.

Army Surplus Stores are a great place to find good stuff.
What's really interesting is that some of the soldiers save MRE's here and there and sell them back to the surplus stores for a little pocket money.
