Very basic quicky shelter. Keeps the rain off, but vulnerable to the wind.

All you need is: - Cordage or Rope
- A tarp

couldn't you just pile a bunch of evergreen bow's onto it for insulation and flooring? and build up the other two ends so that air would warm up in it? I think this has potential to become a very good shelter.

yes I think so, it would be very similar to Les' tripod shelter.

I think its a great idea, i might do that tommrow when I head out to my lot (if it dosnt rain)

so has anyone ever take'n a survival blanket (specificly the Coghlan's one) 52"X82.5" and made a shelter with it? is it big enough to make one like this? If so it would reflect heat, you could make it not tear apart in the wind by adding evergreen bows, but would that cause it to rip? Would you have to put something supportive on the inside for strength (such as the rocky mountin episode)?

If so, that thing is awesome.

Its not only very warm but durable too.

do you think it would need a frame under it and/or above it to prevent it from ripping?

Yes i do.

The other one (Emergency Blanket) is durable enough, so its a much wiser choice, but this one would need some support.

So a basic a-fram like support, just so it dostn tear or fly away.

yea that's what i figured. You could probably make a pretty damm good shelter with 2 of them. A frame with the two sides having a space blanket on each, bows covering them for added insulation. I think it would keep the heat fairly well, especially if you had bows between you and the ground and soemthing acting as a door (like les did with his jacket).

yeah i think it would be awsome. considerin gthere are holes on the corners to loop rope through, makes it easier to build too. It wont fly away.

The standard emergency blanket dosnt have holes and will fly away in windy situations

Alright I made a tarp shelter, bu ti made it differntly> I noticed that the version shown above does have some flaws but the concept is good.

Now I almost finished my shelter last I was out there, going out tommrow to hopefully finish it.

Well actually technically you can never finish your shelter, you can always add more insolation or make it better, but i'm almost done the basic design. I will make some pictures tommrow and posted them up. (If it dosent rain).

I may start a new shelter too, they are a lot of fun and good learning experiance.

Here it is folks!

It was not finished since I didn thave time, but the only thing not done was the back.

This is a side view of the shelter. The firepit is on the left.

The whole unit is suspended by a rope

here is the inside, 3 logs run vertically, and about 30 small brances run horizontally. Topped with spruce boughs for comfort. So the bed is about a food off the ground, incase it rains you dont want to be in the water.

Here is just the front again.

From the back. I didnt finish blocking it off. On the sides I put 4 sharp sticks into the ground. I hammed them in with the back of my axe and attatched bungee cables fromt he holes on the tarp to the brances in the ground. I then took spruce and coverd the sides (Since the until was not touching the ground).

Always good to have a firepit, with the fire burning it got very hot inside the shelter even without the back wall. Since the Thermal Blanket radiates the heat very well it was easy to stay warm.

This is the front. Fire is located more on the right side so that I may enter it on the left.

This is the bedding i mentioned. Three logs, topped with many small logs across. It was actually very comfortable with the spruce. And it keeps you from getting cold through the ground. ALWAYS make bedding and keep yoursel foff the ground.

Finally, this is the site where i built it, i then took it apart.

Leave only footprints,

Very Happy

Though i did leave the materials in a nice little pile.

I will make more of them over time

Awesome job Troop! Is that the same place you always use for your shelters? Just curious because i noticed you didn't fill in and hide the fire pit...
