 I Am Pipe Man !! |

 Well i made some pipes awhile back for kicks. I showed my buddy & he liked it thought it was cool.
So i gave him one. He showed 2 friends, & so on, & so on etc lol. So now i have an order for 4 pipes 
I call them tobacco pipes, what ever someone else sticks in it is none of my business.
So im going to make another 8 or 10 just incase.

> You know Bill i always have been trying to see how long it takes for me to do some of my projects so i can some how put a money scale to it.
But dang it i always for get to look at the clock !   it really depends on if the piece of wood im working with has more carving & wood removal to it. The more strait forward the piece, the faster it happens & ive now made
12 pipes, so, im just getting faster cause ive done it more. > Im going to take a good guess at ... 1.5 to 2 hours start to finish. That doesn't include collecting the wood & harvesting it. Then you have to wait at least 3 months to work it. Thats with cherry wood, other woods, longer, some times alot longer, like 8 to 12 months.
If you do it to soon the wood checks & cracks & its garbage. Its worth the wait trust me
If you've never made one it could take you the first time 4 hours ? but who cares its not about that.
Its about having fun making something you can use. I think my first go at it was about 4 hours ? maybe more i took my time. The tuffest part may be the drilling of the hole for tobacco. its a 5/8'th drill bit. I have a drill press wich really ! helps alot. Other than that, sand paper, a good small knife & if possible a spoon gouge. If not it still can be done, just alittle longer to do.

hey actually i have lots of deer antlers and you could prob make a pipe bowl out of antler and coat the inside with some kind of wax or something
what do you guys think?

Sup ! B lol. I have never used birchwood, nice and dry it may work. Willow, yes dry though. Also Holly tree will work, very dence wood, its my next try soon. I know where there is a pretty big Holly Tree and its on property that is up for developmant. So its just going to get bulldozed & burnt. The deer antler would be cool. For a pipe bowl im not sure, for the stem yes ! that would be very cool. I just thought of one way you mite be able to use deer antler for the bowl with out worry of that God Awefull smell  never mind the taste Yikes !. lol.
If you had the deer antler & made your bowl with pretty thin out side edge & then insert another bowl of hard wood
and epoxy it in place, That ! would be very cool. Alot of work but i think well worth it. Thats something i would like to try. But have no antler  And for the stem; Elder Bush. Its god's natural straw. Look it up on Google, go to images & type that in so you have a visual refrence. And if you do find it, use a coat hanger heat it up with a propane torch and burn out the center. Works great. The center is like foam ? easy to burn it out.

awesome Dave ill see if i can find some Elder Bush around here but i dont think there is any. also i have a piece of willow thats been sitting inside for a long time and its nice and dry i have almost the shape of the bowl already i just need to drill it now and find a stem. but again ill see if there is elder around

Most handmade things like this usually cost an arm and a leg. 
More than they should, anyway.
