Scouts Not Learning "Right" Survival?

I was in scouts, so I could tell you a lot of what goes on. Everyone's aloud to have knifes, and you have to have your safety circle too. Nothing gets out of hand if you have discipline. There's a lot of kids so it gets kind of hyperactive when camping, so there are no stick fights or anything aloud either. You're not aloud to bring a fixed knife, or have your own hatchet. Confused

And yeah sometimes people get really mad at other people. I've seen one kid threaten another with a knife. Confused

Sometimes it's not even relaxing it's just so stressful. Mad

I'm 18 so I'm out of scouts now. I'll probably be doing most of my camping alone now. Cool

I am pro knife. Its a tool not a weapon. Very usefull i say in many ways.
Its just sad when a young person gets a knife doesn't learn to use it properly and hurts themselfs.
Then " Mom & Dad " are all, thats it ! no more knife, lol. Neccessary ? in my eyes yes, but thats me. Not all will share that thought. Smile

Okay. I'm sorry, I didnt read the whole 3 pages on this. I'm lazy. I would just like to add my 2 cents, if you all dont mind.

I am a Scout.
I COMPLETELY and TOTALLY agree with what was said in the origional post. I have my own Handbook, and the Fieldbook. I also have my Dads Handbook and Fieldbook. I have to go off somewhere by myself if I want a fire at camp. And then, I watch the rest of the Scouts trying to light thumb thick pieces of wood with a lighter!!!!!!!! The only other person that realizes the same thing is a friend of mine, one of the leaders. All the Scouts bring cellphones and iPods to camp, and then complain their pack is heavy. 25-30 lb. packs is the best I can do easily. My pack for summer camp (both times this year!) weighed only 27ish lbs. Some of the people with 15 lb. packs were complaining when we hiked in. I didnt want to be mean, but I wanted to tell them to suck it up and trudge along. Even the advanced books (Fieldbook) dont tell you how to properly build a fire. it lists like, 10 cons and maybe 2-3 pros. I was outraged when I read that section. Some of the kids are only in Scouts because they are forced to be, and they would complain about free food if it had to do with Scouting.

Again, I think they need to really drop the 'S' and 'C', and make it 'outing'.

Well it varies by troop to troop how well you're taught. I had a good troop with great leaders, but everyone was antsy and ran around and acted childish. Electronics are actually banned from our outings except for one. If you want change in your troop you have to stand up and say something. Tell somebody you want to do a fire presentation and teach them right. It's only as good as you make it.

I try to to do things like take my patrol on a hike or show knife safety, but none of them are enthusiastic enough to do it. I think some of them are scared to do things like that, but if they wont DO it, they'll never get over it.

Yeah, I see what you mean. If i'd ever ask anyone to go hike out in the woods they wouldn't. They just want to stay in camp and be childish with everyone else. Rolling Eyes

But I will say something. Since I'm no longer in scouts I find I don't camp near as much, and I do miss that.

Hmmmm, I'm not in scouts because the local troop isn't that great. They go to a couple fun places, but to be able to even carry a freakin pocket knife you have to be a certain rank, nu uh, not for me, if I'm ANYWHERE besides school, airport, or goverment building, I have a knife. Now going into the woods without one is pure stupidity.

I'm with you too. I have a knife on me everywhere, I also have my multitool. They have to be careful with things like that though, because in scouts you always have at least one special kid who's going to hurt themselves. One time we had some guys doing a saw and axe demonstration. One was swinging and the other put his hand in the way. Sliced his tendon in his thumb. Sad

But the scouts do have a lot of good qualities to it. For instance I probably wouldn't know any knots, but now I can teach them to people. I did learn how to make fires from scouts, and how to fold a flag. It's not a bad organization, it's just quality dependand on the troop, it's leadership, and the motivation of the group. I'm in a good size city so our troop was good size, so we had pretty good funds. We would go on an outing every month, and have meetings every week. I don't think it's as good for the older guys because of the immaturity of the majority of the troop. There will always be more younger people than older people in scouts. It gives them a step in the right dirrection. I just have one political complaint. They don't let gays or atheists in the boy scouts which is very discriminitive. Likewise they do have religious worship in scouts if you didn't know. Confused
