Yeah, I agree, too.

I would take a Grohmann or Ka-Bar/Becker any day over a Cold Steel. Cool

My KA-BAR found itself a permanent home. Mr. Green

I almost got the BK-2, but decided it was just too much knife for me.

Just sharpened my KA-BAR today, and I must say, I did a swell job. Cool Before, it was okay sharp. Now, it is wicked sharp. Twisted Evil

Not that it is sharper than my new BM 556 Mini-Grip. Wink I'm not sure anything is, less than a surgeon's scalpel. Heck, it could be used as a surgeon's scalpel! Surprised

The great thing about super sharp blades is that if you cut yourself, it makes a nice, clean cut. Shocked Laughing

Fortunately, I haven't drawn blood with this one, yet. And I hope I don't ever.

But yeah, anyway, back to the topic. You can get a much nicer knife for your money than the SRK. And you really can't beat a KA-BAR. Cool

What exactly do you plan to do with this knife, by the way? I'm guessing the usual bushcraft beating? Batonning, splitting, shaving, cutting, skinning, gutting, etc?

Have I sold you on the KA-BAR yet, or do you still want the #4? I wouldn't mind having one, myself. Very Happy But, I have enough fixed blades for now. Emphasis on the FOR NOW. Wink If I find the Buck Diamondback Guide fixed at a store, I might just have to buy it, though. Razz Just a small, light little fixed. Cool Too cute to pass up. Smile Might get the gut hook version instead since I don't own any. Keep it as my little skinner knife. Cool

Hope you're happy with whatever you get. Very Happy

Just FYI...the steel used in the KaBar / Becker blades is 1095 Cro Van.

It's a wee bit softer than the 0176-C that was used in the Camillus made Beckers & won't take quite as keen of an edge, but should be a little stronger steel.
That's not to say that it's TOO soft or WON'T hold an edge,it's just not the same steel.
KaBar's been working with 1095 for a long time & they know how to treat it to get the best performance out of it.

The 0-176 C that Camillus used is the same steel as Carbon V that Cold Steel used in thier better knives a number of years ago. It's kind of a well known secret that at one time,Camillus was producing Cold Steel blades.
THAT was good stuff!
It's no coincedence that when Camillus went out of business was exactly when Cold Steel contractors ramped up production the cheaper stuff like AUS 8 & VG 1.
CS couldn't source 0176 C / Carbon V anywhere else.

So....now you've got me between a BK7 and the #4.

Has anyone used both who can comment, or should I just pick one since they'll both serve me fine? I think the #4 weighs less, which is a factor, but I can't seem to get an exact weight for it. Can anyone provide?

Winter:
Here are the specs on the Grohman #4:

D. H. Russell Canadian Camp Survival Knife - (DHR-4S) $89.95
Type Fixed blade skinner
Blade Length 5-1/2 "
Blade Steel High Carbon Stainless
Rockwell 56-58
Handle Rosewood
Tang Full
Overall Length 10-1/4 "
Weight 7.2 oz
Origin Canada
Sheath Leather

I have no experience with the Grohman,so I can't comment on durability or whether or not you can spark a fero rod with it or the sheath or anything else.
But there are some Grohman Gurus here that should be able to help you out with that.

I have used the Becker, both Camillus & KaBar offerings & although you will need to file some of the blade coating off to use it on a fero rod, everything else was good to go as is.
It IS a big knife & somewhat heavier than the Grohman if that's an issue.
Weight is 13 oz.

Hey Winter, Fonly is the only one I know of that has a BK-7 and #4.

Just send him a pm. He can fill you in. Cool He'll get an email that he has a new private message, and will probably log in soon.

But as a start, the #4 doesn't spark a ferro rod well. Smile

Here's a review of four of his knives(including the #4). Cool

Fun in the shop, looking for a new hiking knife

And here's a post with the BK-7.

The other side of batonning.

And the KA-BAR and Buck 119

Ka-bar Vs Buck 119. Its time!

Chopper Vs. a BK7.

Hope that helps.

Have fun with that Mora, Kim! Very Happy

I guess flf got all the appropriate info pretty well, though if you have a specific question, or want a certain picture let me know. I still have both knives on hand.

Thank you muchly. I usually carry my leatherman charge on my belt and the back of the saw does a mighty fine job throwing sparks.

Yeah, the back of a Leatherman multitool saw is the absolute best thing I have ever found to strike a firesteel. Even better than a Mora! Surprised

The best. Cool

Ragnar's Swedish Knife Catalog

Email him to make sure he has some in stock. While you're at it, tell him Cliff sent ya. Wink Laughing

ragnar@ragweedforge.com

He's a great guy to do business with. Cool

If I wanted another Mora, I would definitely buy it from him. But, one Mora is enough for me. They're all pretty much the same. If I were you, I might go for something different, but don't let me talk you out of getting it. Smile If you want it, go for it. It's only $10. Cool Then go buy another one. Twisted Evil (a different kind, of course)

Maybe something like a Field Pup.

You can shop around for a better price, though. Cabela's is a good, reliable place to get gear, but they do tend to have higher prices and killer shipping rates. search.yahoo.com is usually the place I use to find things like this. Cool

Happy knife buying! Very Happy

P.S. I have a Field Pup if you have any questions about it. Smile

GROHMANN KNIVES RULE !!!!! .... Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised

Well, thats just IMO Razz Wink
Ive used all mine for stricking ferro rods and got lots sparks flying.
I find the #4 heavy enough for all camp jobs, & you can still slice veggies, fish, bread etc.
Ive never pounded the crap out of any of my knives like some poeple do, i just dont do that with my blades.
But im sure that any " Survival " job i gave my #4 it would do a good job. Cool
There are many good knive companys out there & many good blades.
Its all about finding one that fits you & feels good in your hand.
" If it doesnt feel good in your hand ? ... you'll never want to use it "
I think that feel is very important.

Well, for one it is a lot thicker and can do some light to medium batonning and splitting. Basically, it is a little stronger than a Mora. If you want something that you can use a little harder, you might consider buying it(instead of having two Moras that are more or less the same).

Just a thought. Cool

Any other questions? Laughing
