Since I've had some kind compliments about my avatar, I'll share the story behind it. A few years ago I visited Kenya and did the typical safari route thing. The scenery and wildlife are incredible. Nearly all the game viewing was done from the safety of a van. (One of the rules common to all game preserves is do not get out of the vehicle. at the risk of becoming Purina Lion Chow or something.) But in Meru, a park in the northern district, there was a small herd of black rhinos that were protected 24/7 by armed guards. They followed the rhino during the day as they grazed, then herded them (Don't ask me how!) to a compound at night. Poaching was, and remains, a huge threat.
Because the rhino were used to people, we were allowed to leave the van and go see the rhinos on foot. A short walk through the bush brought us to where they were grazing at the moment. It's an unforgettable experience to enter a clearing and be among several rhino. The animals ignored us as we cautiously walked around taking photos. So, the photo in my avatar was one that I took on foot, with a standard lens, not even a telephoto. That alone should have been the highlight of the trip, but it got better.
My tour guide, who was very experienced and highly knowledgeable, offered to take my picture with the rhino. But he said don't just stand near it. They are very used to having birds land on then looking for insects, so being touched won't bother them. As long as I approached gently and stayed away from the sharp end, I would be okay. I'm not sure which side of the fine line between bravery and stupidity I was on, but I posed just long enough for the photo below to be taken.
What impressed me - in addition to the feeling of not believing what I had just done - was how soft the rhino's hide was. It was not the tough armour that they are sometimes credited with. More like a cow's hide.

this is the one i use on most sites. No real reason for it. I like big cats, images of large cats going for the neck of their prey is echoed in my fighting style.
 | | Cougars attempt to stalk their prey and attack from cover. They frequently kill sheep and goats by biting the top of the neck or head. Broken necks are common in these kills. This differs from the typical coyote bite in the throat and general mutilation caused by dogs. However, cougars also may kill sheep and goats by biting the throat. This may result from prey falling or being knocked down and caught, or it may simply be the method found effective by individual cougars and most convenient on some prey animals. |

My current one is the symbol for the lifesaving society. It is a person rescuing (swimming in) another person. The S shape is the rescuers arms and the circles are the 2 peoples heads.
